I've bought rat poison from amazon and it's worked well. The rats are attracted to it, eat it and die. The only thing is you have to be careful of pets in the house because if they eat it there could be big trouble. Or if they eat a dead rodent body that has been poisoned they could get very sick/die (depending on the size of dog).

Set traps. You don't want the smell of dead anything.

Put a rat bait station outside the residence.  Put poison in the attic too.  If the rats eat the poison, they will probably go outside and die.

Use a bromide poison, not warfarin.  You want a fast poison.

+1 for an acute poison. For bromide it only takes 1 dose. Again, consider pets in the house though.

And just let the poop be.

Unless you are a poop collector of some kind.  Then it's golden.
