Keep an above ground pool or have it removed?
« on: October 08, 2015, 01:42:29 PM »
I am thinking of buying a 888 sq. ft one level house (this will be my house for retirement) - I am downsizing (have already sold previous home) and so will be paying for this for CASH (WooHOO!)

The house comes with an above ground pool - I live in New England and it's never been my dream to have a backyard pool. In fact, I rented all summer and never once went to the pool at my aprtment complex - even when it hit 95 degrees!

I just don't want the upkeep and liability and I envision so much more outdoor space in the fully fenced backyard if I have it removed.

So - I am not really too conflicted about this but am mainly curious to hear if others' here have removed an above ground pool? I also see that people advertise on craigslist for folks to take them away for free. I wonder if that is worth the trouble. I am pretty comfortable factoring in the cost of this as part of the purchase expense.

Thanks in advance!!

If you don't want it, you won't maintain it. Get rid of it.

Yes, drain it an offer it on craigslist to the first person willing to take it apart and haul it away without damaging your property.

Remove it - especially since you don't really care about swimming. You'll have a dead patch that will need reseeding in the spring, but it will be cheaper (insurance rates alone should be much less with it gone) and nicer looking than leaving it. I loathe above ground pools... sooooo ugly.

And that is another good point.  Your homeowners' insurance will drop without the pool.
