I recently learned of a friend who has a brother that is a grad student and has found an incredibly frugal form of housing. Apparently Mission Bay in San Diego only charges $350/mo for a slip fee, which includes free use of electricity, resort bathrooms, pools and spas. One could purchase a boat for as little as $5k.

If you want to move to California, but are spooked by the housing prices, I guess that is one way to do it.

Not at all related. If I had housing expenses at that price, I could probably retire tomorrow. :)

Lots of people in SoCal choose to live this way.  I would guess the majority are single.

$350/mo sounds pretty cheap for a slip, but maybe there's more demand in the LA/OC area so they cost a little more up this way.  Personally, I think Mission Bay is an awesome spot, so this is definitely something to dream about.  My family of five requires a bit more space though.  I was kayaking in Alamitos Bay in Long Beach recently and was mulling this over.  I think the ongoing boat maintenance would be a hidden expense that needs to be considered.  That ocean air & saltwater can do a number after awhile. 

With the higher slip fees in this area, plus boat maintenance and taxes/insurance, I estimated it would probably be the same as renting a studio apartment.
