Start a Career in Real Estate Investing - scam?
« on: June 11, 2014, 01:44:37 AM »
I noticed this ad on Craigslist: http://bellingham.craigslist.org/rej/4511986713.html

Start a Career in Real Estate Investing

National Real Estate Investing Group seeks Apprentice/Student in the Bellingham area interested in making an earning potential of $5k per month part time while learning what we do and helping us do it. We're not going to ask you to quit your job, but we are going to ask that you treat this opportunity like your second job and work it! Training provided for qualified candidates.

For more information, please reply by email with a resume and a phone number where you can be reached.

Just like most careers in Real Estate, this is a commission based 1099 (not W2) business
opportunity.

Give my current state of unemployment and my desire to gradually learn more about real estate investing, is this a legitimate something?

My guess is it's an opportunity for you to give them money.

If you want to learn about real estate investing I would do research on www.biggerpockets.com and consider joining the local Real Estate Investor Association - http://www.mynationalreia.com/clubportal/795files/Directory.cfm?clubID=795&statevalue=WA

It could be about birddogging where you find them deals and you get a referral fee.  They make the big money but you do learn.

Basically the exact same ad (but Palm Springs instead of Bellingham) was discussed about six months ago:
http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/question-about-cl-ad-scam/

Took me a bit to dig up since they just pasted the link to it, and not the description, so many of the keywords I wanted weren't in the post.  Thanks for cutting and pasting in your OP, that'll make this easier to find when future people post about this.  :)

Go read that thread.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
