I'm the loser so far!  2400 square feet for two adults... aaand six fully-grown Australian Shepherds.

Our house is also over 100 years old, has old crappy windows, is inefficently laid out (does NOT feel over twice as big as our previous house), and has bad insulation! :D

Two of us in 1,400 SF.  The only time we go upstairs is when somebody is coming to spend the night, to make up the beds or do a little cleaning.
Also have about 5,000 SF of shop and barn space.   Can't live without that :)

2200 sq ft and one adult (the 4lb elderly cat doesn’t count).

Kept it in the divorce 9 years ago since it was still brand new (no maintenance costs!) and I didn’t want to lose money. And I really didn’t want to move.  Utilities and property taxes are very reasonable.  But I’m dying to sell it now and downsize greatly.

2,200 sq ft for 2 married adults. We only use the master bed/bath, kitchen, and living room, but it's so cheap there's no point in moving.

How much space you need will entirely depend on what you need the space for.

DH and I share 800sqft, we just sort of downsized from 1500 sqft. I say sort of, because our old place had one room used as a gym, a bunch of storage we didn't need, a second bathroom that was rarely used, a giant laundry room, where we stored bikes, and a home office we no longer need as DH's job needs have changed.

Our new place is a large 1 bedroom in a building with a gym, bike room, and laundry room outside of the unit. We're also minimalists with no hobbies that we do inside the house, and we spend a decent amount of time apart for work, so don't need much space from each other when we're here together.

Our new place feels bigger because each main space is bigger and better laid out than the old house, which felt huge but cramped at the same time sometimes.
Layout is a huge factor, but again depends on what you need the space for.

If you are a crafter/hobbyist who needs a hobby space as well as a home office, has a child who plays drums, and you're really into Kayaking, then you will need A LOT more space than I do, and you will want a lot of that space very separate.

1900 sq ft.  2 adults but are Downsizing to an old bungalow 1300  sq ft but we will add a sunroom so will end up at around 1600.

. We are senior citizens and dont need that much sq footage but this downsizer was the house for us. Setting and lot were what we wanted. The two upstairs bedrooms will not be used much.

Our home is about 1250 sq ft.  5 occupants (2 adults, 3 kids aged 8-12).  Plenty space.  (No basement, attic, garage, but we do have a large pool and lots of good weather.)

1700 sq ft. 2 adults, 3 small kids, 2 dogs, no basement, but plenty of storage space in the garage

Realistically, we could do without 400 sq ft or more and not miss a thing.

But, in my defense, it houses 3 kids, 3 adults, and a full welding/machine shop.

I think we're 2200 sq ft for two adults, a kid, and a dog.  There are rooms in our house that we just don't use . . . so I'm pretty sure that we could get by fine between 15-1700 square ft though.  In the area we wanted to buy though, ours was one of the smallest in square footage.  Most houses around us are 3000+.

We used to have 1500 sf (+500 sf garage) with 3 occupants. That worked really well. Now we have 3,000 sf (+700 sf garage) with 5 occupants. It also works, though sometimes I think we would be better off with 2,000 sf of house and 2,000+ sf of garage/shop.

Good news is electricity averages about $150 a month.
Bad news is taxes are $6200 a year.  Damn I hate property taxes

3500 sq ft, 3 humans and 2-4 cats.      It's more than we need but we really like it and it's location.   It does include space for a glass studio and a jewelry studio, plus 2 spare bedrooms and room to entertain.   We also got a really good deal on it so it only cost us $43k when we sold our old house.  Only costs about $2k more per year in taxes, insurance, and utilities because it's much better insulated than the old house.

It's also much more suitable for aging in place.   Almost no stairs and the hallways/stairs are wide enough to easily fit one of those stair elevators if we ever need one.

1040 square feet with a basement and pretty big yard (75 x 130) - 1 person, 1 dog and 2 cats.  2nd bedroom is a guest room and 3rd is storage/office.  Feels too big, but with a roommate, it feels too small.  More work than I'd like, but I do love it here.

About 1800SF Classic California Ranch for me and 2 kids plus dog and cat. Oldest daughter lives elsewhere but comes for visits with friends. MIL visits for month long stints, and traveling friends and family often stop by for overnights. Those times feel like the right size, as it does when we host gatherings for various things. I've thought of downsizing, but the house really works in so many ways now.

1600 sq ft. 2 adults, 2 kids. Some basement space too, maybe 499 finished, 400 unfinished.

It's about perfect for us given the cold climate. In a more temperate area we could deal with half the space.

1500 sq living space and 400 sq Garage and 1/3 acre yard for  2 adults, 1 baby,  one more baby on the way and a dog. If feel its enough space for us, DW very much wants to finish the basement.

960sqft plus an extra deep 1 car garage for two adults, a large dog, and two cats. We basically don't use one of the bedrooms so we could probably go down to 7-800. My main concern of we were to have a kid would be wanting another bathroom once it started potty training

~2500 sq ft for 2 adults and 2 small dogs. It’s a clown house for the two of us but about a quarter of the year we have guests stay with us so the occupancy increases to up to 13 adults and 4 dogs. Our house is the annual beach vacation spot for many of our family and friends.

Hmm, I probably shouldn't admit this.

3400sf above grade, 3000sf below. about half the basement is finished walk-out. 7 people, 4 adults and 3 kids. One cat. Two butterflies in cocoons currently. 600sf attached garage, shared.

1600sf workshop. ALL MINE

8,600sf of space total. 3 acres. In the city! Net cost is pretty reasonable but it's still a pretty astonishing setup.

1,074 sq ft row home, plus an unfinished basement and a 75 foot fenced in back yard & patio.  Built in 1890... oh if the walls could talk :)...  Housing two adults with a baby on the way.
