how do you find information on the "sold" prices for homes?

Hi,  MMM posted on his article for selling his high-end rental house that he had signed up for an email notification service for new listings and home sales.
I like to track the listing prices on realtor.com and I can find some info on final sales price on Zillow.com but most sales have N/A listed for "sold price."
Any advice on how to find out this information on my own would be most helpful.  Do I need to talk to a real estate broker?

Many county governments have property records online that include the sales history of the propery. My county has online data going back to the 1980s.

What state are you in? In some states, this is not a matter of public record.
In others, it is incredibly simple to find.

To my knowledge the only real way to do this in Canada is to pay a real estate agent, become a real estate agent and pay a fee for access to their database, or make a request to the local registry/land titles office and pay some money.

They appear on Realtor.com for me, after closing. Maybe it's a state by state thing.

Thanks for the replies. I live in New Mexico and not in a large metro area, so possibly this impacts getting much info on realor.com or Zillow.  I will have to check to see if my county has any online records.

Check the websites of local realtors.  I don't live in big metro area but two local real estate agencies let you search for recently sold properties and show the sold price.  Unfortunately they don't list the list price after its sold.

Because property valuations are used to calculate taxes, sale prices are a matter of public record.   Virtually all county assessors provide this information online.

Not true in non-disclosure states (like Texas).

Redfin.com might have what you're seeking.  In my area (they are not in all areas) they have records available back 3 years.
