First time rental property- Duplex or SFH?
« on: March 17, 2013, 07:22:51 PM »
In general, what would you recommend for someone looking to buy their first rental property- a duplex or a single family home? Are there definite pros/cons in choosing one over the other?

If you're living in it, the duplex and renting out the other side often makes sense.

If you already have a residence, then it just becomes the numbers.

In some areas, SFRs make no sense, but multiplexes (duplexes, triplexes, and quads) have a nice return.  In other areas, the opposite.

If it's strictly a rental, it's a numbers game.
