Landlords and house flippers: do you often talk about your houses?

Questions for any of you landlords and/or house flippers:

Is it "customary" for your rental houses and/or flip houses to be a frequent topic of conversation with friends and family?

Do you ask friends and family members to come over and see your flip projects?

Do you hold "open house" events with family members?

Just curious what normal behavior is. Thanks.

No.  It's not in my experience.  If someone expresses an interest in the topic (or getting ahead in general) I'll gladly discuss it but I don't usually bring it up.

Do you ask friends and family members to come over and see your flip projects?

I took my son around to look at them.   He'll inherit some of them and he'll be responsible for them on his sister's behalf so that makes sense to me.
If my uncle who had run his own real estate business for many decades ( He was up to over 25 units at one point) had been well enough to travel, I would have taken him around, but he would have had a professional interest in the topic and would have been pleased to share his knowledge with us.

If I know someone has an interest in learning how to do whatever task we're doing on a house, I'll invite them over.   Ditto if they have an interest in real estate.  Otherwise, no.

No.

Yes. It’s constant talk with family, as we all have multiple rentals and share in maintenance, management, rehabs, etc. 

Amongst friends, it’s a common topic with the other landlords and remodelers I associate with. 

And I’ve helped a handful of friends get into the real estate investing world, so that becomes frequent talk.

Open houses? I don’t actively try to show anything to friends/family unless someone asks, and then I’ll happily oblige. But I have no problem asking to see their places!  Market research!

This labor day weekend, my extended family got together. While I have moved away a bit, my rental is near many of the family members. One person asked if the place was rented, another commented about how much growth there was in the area so housing prices will likely rise. That's it.

If anyone else at the family gathering also owned rentals, I'm sure it would have been discussed in more than just passing comments.

I have some rentals and just participated in rehabbing a new property. It's a topic of conversation, like just about anything that's fair game. As always, I try to know the room when talking about things like this. It's of interest only if others are interested. If not, there are a million other things under the sun to talk about.

Yes. But I have to wonder it it's just me. I have some family members...well, you already get the point, as you saw right through my post.

Given that they're in this to make money, I kind of see it as the equivalent of me talking about my investments. I just don't. Nobody would care, and if my investments are doing well, then it just comes off as bragging.

I think I need to figure out a nice way to say "not interested" without hurting feelings or squelching excitement.

Maybe shows like HGTV (wait, is that a show or a channel?) have skewed people's views to the point that we assume others want to talk about and see house rehabs, even it they've never shown any interest in house rehabs.

Similar to what others have said, rentals are the equivalent of investments and/or income. If you are comfortable enough to talk about income or investments with someone, then real estate would qualify.

I rarely talk to my dad's family about my investments because they do not invest. Talking about it would come off like bragging. My mom's side of the family includes family members with investments, so the topic might come up.

Do you ask friends and family members to come over and see your flip projects? No, we invite them to see what we've been up to. Participation is completely optional. We don't hound them for feedback. However, there are people whose opinions we respect, and we do ask for feedback, mainly because we appreciate other perspectives and opinions. Friends and family are more likely to be brutally honest.

Do you hold "open house" events with family members? Hell, no. We're not this organized. However, I did send listing links to a few siblings and relatives. I also posted a link in my journal, primarily because I have talked about it extensively there too, lol.

I loves me some real estate porn. I have also quietly helped a few forumites with their house hunting adventures behind the scenes. I even get DH in on the process, because he can read a house like a book and is happy to do so. It's kind of like armchair traveling. Just today, someone in another country sent a link to another possibility in their search for their first home, and it's the best one yet. I'm very excited for them and I know they're going to make a good choice. The Frugalwoods use the term frugal weirdos. I guess we're real estate weirdos.
