I'm in the midst of refinancing to nix PMI and lower my rate. I'm considering shopping around for my title company, rather than just going with the company suggested by the lender (if it will save me money).
The loan amount will be ~$240,000. The estimates for title work are:
Closing/Escrow - $800
Document Prep - $65
Exam/Attorney's Opinion - $150
Lender's Policy - $320
Total - $1335
If these are reasonable costs, I'm happy to just roll with it, but I figured some of you may have enough experience with title companies to suggest better alternatives. For reference, the three title companies suggested by my lender are Mortgage Connect, Service Link, or First American.
