Hello to you all!
I've browsed around this section in the hopes that I might find a thread that helps me, but either I'm blind, or there isn't one.
My partner and I are closing on our new land in less than two weeks (yay!) and so we're starting to think about the house build. Although we're going to deal with the proper professionals, I like to be as involved and as aware as possible. I was wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction in terms of blogs, websites, books, or other resources that I should start exploring in order to understand what we're getting into and the questions we should be asking, the vetting of professionals, etc.
If it helps to be more specific: we're based in Canada (Québec), and will be building on otherwise unexploited land with a decent pitch, and will be building everything (including a driveway, well, leach field, etc) from scratch. We both feel very strongly about building a smaller home, with the smallest physical and environmental footprint as possible (passive solar, locally sourced materials, etc.).

This may not be your dream, but I'll put it out there anyway: We designed a home that was primarily assembled inside a factory, offsite, then delivered and the 4 pieces put together. It saved a huge amount of time and money, and we got a terrific final home. Happy to send pictures. The price per square foot was approximately 34% cheaper than stick built on site. (very mustachian) This is a two-story home that fits in well with our neighborhood, not the standard modular that everyone thinks of. We hated the modular company by the end, but there are other companies with much better customer relations that you might want to check into.

I love the fine home building podcast. They have about 60 episodes by now, I'd start with #1 and just keep on going. You'll learn a ton and it's pretty entertaining.

Thank-you! I've thought about modular home-building actually! I'd love a few pictures if you're open to it. And can I ask why you hated the company by the end? What type of research you did to find the company in question? How much say you had in terms of the design/materials?
