Title: 4G Security Camera
Post by: jmoney on August 12, 2014, 08:33:44 PM
So I'm going through my steps to make my properties as self sufficient as possible to allow me to move to another city and invest from far away. My plan is to move between cities every two or three months but I'm putting in place systems to see if I can manage all my rental properties for one year without visiting any of them.

One of the systems I am thinking about is a wireless 4g camera. Sounds expensive but look how cheap - 150 per camera and 20 per month. The catch is that it doesn't look weatherproof. I may have to look for a different model but it sure looks cool.

My thoughts for the cameras is that I have several pockets of properties where there are a couple next to each other. I can point the camera from one house to the next, etc. It will also tell me if the grass is being cut, exterior maintained, etc. The camera has a motion sensor so I can see who is coming and going. Helpful for tenant skips, breakins, etc.

Was just curious if anyone has ever used something like this? Is it any good? I would really prefer to have something like this integrated with simpli-safe's monitoring since I already pay for that. However it looks cool and its headed in the right direction.

Those cameras are kind of ridiculous for what you're paying for, and it still doesn't provide the internet connection and bandwidth necessary to do remote access with them. Their service is basically nothing more than a cloud-based DVR. If you're really wanting IP cameras, you could get far better for the same price (http://www.ubnt.com/enterprise/#unifi-video).

I'm not sure technology and cameras are the solution you're after, they are not a substitute for hands-on care. What you need are reliable and honest people managing your properties for you. Cameras act more as a dissuader towards vandalism.
