OnTrajectory, from cFIREsim
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:39:06 AM »
Just went to try cFIREsim.com for the first time. They are working on a new "financial life planning tool," with a banner at the top of the site.

The new site is called OnTrajectory https://www.ontrajectory.com/welcome.html and seems to do basically the same thing but it a more user-friendly interface.

I thought it interesting and helpful, way better than cFIREsim for someone getting started.

It seems they'll be going to a freemium model soon but currently all the functionality is free.

Have any of you more knowledgeable folks looked at it yet? Any hangups, concerns, things to watch for in the assumptions?

Ugh.  Gut reaction is not good.

Hope Bo_Knows chimes in with an update.

Is there a post or place I can find data on how to figure out my FIRE point. Just started playing with on trajectory, and things look good, but cannot seem to figure out my FIRE point. Thanks for any help.

No need to worry here. I've been serving as an "advisor" for OnTrajectory, telling them some of the finer points of what makes a retirement calculator "good" in the eyes of users. Part of that agreement was to throw a banner up on cFIREsim's page to drive traffic.

This is no way affects cFIREsim as an open source project.

OT is basically trying to be a retirement calculator that taps into the API of financial institutions so that you can have more real-time views on retirement progress, and show some more meaningful and deep analysis on what might effect your retirement.  They're basically trying to make a real business out of a retirement calculator, something that I never had the know-how or drive to do. So, I'll offer my advice, but I'm not developing anything for them.

Also, I admittedly haven't worked on cFIREsim for awhile.  I did a big push around Christmas to look for a new job.  For a long time, coding has been just a hobby of mine, but I finally landed a job as a developer for a local Financial Services company (ha! what a fit!). So, I haven't paid much attention to the project lately.  I'm trying to clean up some of the bugs that I see on it.

I'm sort of excited about this.  Assuming it's not super pricey, I'll consider buying in.

Agreed.  They're looking to get a user-base based on having a free subscription, to show enough interest that financial institutions might want to have their service integrated into their site.  So, for the foreseeable future, it should be free or very affordable.

Phew!  Glad to hear it!  :)

I'll check out the OnTrajectory site more, their goal sounds like a good one.

They had a glitch...well, I broke something...they were really responsive and helpful.
