And we all know how to pronounce Oregon, right? Not like "ory-GONE". It's "ory-gun" or some people do more of an "or-ih-gun". Either way, no "gone".

It hurts when people move to Portland and don't know how to pronounce their adoptive state's name =(

Steve Harvey walks us through the eras when it has been said Loss AN-jee-leeze (Teddy Roosevelt, 1903), Loce AHNG-hayl-ais (Los Angelkes Times, early 1900s), Loss AN-guh-less (Mayor Fletcher Bowron, 1950s) .Law SANG-lus (Mayor Sam Yorty, 1960s), Los AN-ju-leez (Arlo Guthrie), Loce AN-guh-leeze (Texas governor Rick Perry, 2011) and finally how most came to settle on the prevailing pronunciation — Loss AN-ju-less — thanks to the United States Board on Geographic Names.

I say none of those, I say Org-in (like a church organ, or your kidneys, liver, etc.).

I've heard "ory-gun" some and "or-ih-gun" even less (and almost never ory-gone), but I feel like my way is most common.  No?

Not common, I don't think. I mean, the center sound is definitely the softest, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone local drop it completely. Although admittedly, my exposure to the SE corner of Oregon has been quite limited =P The rest of the state I've got pretty well covered though.

And ory-gone is from visitors, usually east coast or southern peeps. Everyone originally from west of the rockies seems to have at least a passable pronunciation.

Huh.  My wife from California also would say it "Portland, Org-in."

Literally one of the most popular U of O stickers for sale:

I see it on cars and shirts all the time.

Huh, alright then.  Learned something new.

It seriously is a soft middle sound though, so I'm being pretty pedantic. No one will care so long as you don't say "gone" as the last syllable!

Honestly, the y sound weirds me out more than the u sound.

Like, mine pronunciation differs on both syllables.

Org vs. Ory

and gun vs. in.  The un vs in is close in sound, but adding the "y" in it is stranger to me.

I did place a request. This is the response that I got.

Quote
Thank you for your suggestion for the book, Rising: Strategies for the broke, the at-risk, and those who love them by Joon Madriga.  The Hawaii State Public Library System selects materials on the basis of various factors such as appropriateness for the collection (e.g. academic versus general public readership) and the evaluation of books by a variety of review journals, such as Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist.  Should the book receive a favorable review from such a journal, we will be happy to give the book further consideration.

Thank you for your interest.

@scrubbyfish -- Maybe other libraries also use similar criteria.

Thank you very much, everyone! Very, very, very much :)

Yes, it seems many libraries are deciding against carrying it, due to being self-published, not reviewed by a fancy journal, etc. Darn!

I sure appreciate each of you putting in the request.

Maybe one day someone fancy will pitch it and more good things will happen!

Tried Henderson, NV but got this: "Unfortunately, we won't be able to order the book “Rising: Strategies for the Broke, the At-Risk, and Those Who Love Them” by Joon Madriga for the library collection because we were unable to find any professional reviews for this title."

For a second I wondered if they'd let you check it out that long, and why you'd wait so long to read it.

Then I realized.

Oh here is a bit of context.  Must be nice to have something you've written reach people on the other side of the planet you happen to live on:

Ha, yes.  Christmas day is forecast to be 35 degrees celsius or 95 degrees farenheit in Melbourne.  Please send some snow if you are in the northern hemisphere. Thank you.

Thank you, misterhorsey! And, yes, the context and photos are beautiful :)      A forum member emailed me this update; I'll post it to the website.

This thread has been so enlightening. So many new criteria some libraries are setting! The input from the libraries, as shared by folks here, is terrifically helpful. I mean, I've been so discouraged too, but the clear information about what they need is really important.

I've been working super hard behind-the-scenes to help the book gain its legs. Still on it!

Per the super helpful info on this thread, I've started one asking how to smash that library barrier :)

You're back!! :-)

:)    I feel I never left, and that I'm not quite back, lol.

lhamo emailed me with misterhorsey's kind news, and I wanted to come and say thank you! I am slowly and quietly tiptoeing through the peripheral tulips.

Endless thanks to arebelspy for his help through my stumbly transitions.
