Moderator - thanks for the explanation. I don't know if any or all of the links were spam, or just dedicated MMM readers who are infrequent posters.
Thank you all for the suggestions. We have a Whole Foods near us and we already buy in bulk. The question is, can we get it cheaper?
This week Whole Foods has 20% off all bulk items, so we stocked up for the next month or two. This also gave me a super long receipt of only bulk items.
Armed with my super long receipt, I was able to easily compare prices across various sites. The clear winner is Azure Standard. Their prices are 10-60% cheaper than Whole Foods, and they have the best selection of both organic and conventional items. However, ordering from them isn't as straightforward as most of the other sites. From my research, it seems like Azure Standard is in the business of supplying Food Co-ops and other grocery stores. To order, you need to call them and see if there is a food drop-off near you. If yes, then you can make your order and the next time a truck drives that route, they'll drop of your food at that location (it could be a grocery store, a person's house, a co-operative living place, etc). If there is not a drop off, you can arrange for one but your minimum order must be $550. That's a lot of beans, oats and spices! You can designate your home a drop-off point, and other people can make their own orders to help you reach that $550 minimum. Also note that while some bulk items are available in 5 pound bags, but most are only available in 25 pounds (at least for rice, beans, lentils, grains, etc). Azure is located in Oregon and they will ship to me in California, but I don't know the extent of their entire delivery network for the rest of you. I haven't ordered yet, so I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks "Gin" for the recommendation!
Who has used Azure and what is your experience? I live in the SF Bay Area (Walnut Creek) - anybody nearby want to join in on a bulk order?
I have used Penzeys for spices. Frontier Co-op seems good too, from my online comparison. Honeyville had good prices but limited selection. Thanks everybody for your input!
