What Podcasts are you listening to?
« on: March 14, 2015, 03:11:06 PM »
I enjoy listening to podcasts on the way to work or while working out.  Just interested in what your favorites are and if you have any suggestions?

Favourites on NPR: Invisibilia and Ask Me Another.
On CBC: Tapestry, Rewind, DNTO, Q (depending on the guests).

I like a lot of public radio podcasts but those are my curren first choices.

I take quick showers, and that's when I tend to listen, so I like short podcasts with interesting or odd stories - 99% Invisible and the memory palace are two that come to mind.  Planet Money and Freakonomics are longer, and often good too.  You probably wouldn't appreciate knit.fm, though ;-).

Bigger Pockets - Real Estate, awesome information

Radical Personal Finance - This is my main podcast currently, near daily episodes that are long

Mad Fientist - infrequent episodes nowadays

Financial Mentor - Doesn't have new episode but essential listens if you manage your own finances!

Since I bike commute I don't listen to podcasts during commute. I instead listen while cooking, ironing, and washing dishes.  DW appreciates that I am more willing to cook when I can listen to some good information.

Great stuff.  Thanks.

Freakonomics is the only one I consistently listen to.

Looking for things that help to improve me, whether it be financial, fitness, health, current events, etc.

This American Life, religiously

Planet Money for sure

Savage Lovecast--I love advice columns, and he's very funny

The Longest Shortest Time, a parenting podcast; I don't have kids but it's still very interesting

Death, Sex & Money is often great

And of course I can't wait for Serial to come back.

Just one season of Serial. Another one is supposed to come this year (2015), but as of Feb they were still looking for a story.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

I listen to NPR as broadcast, and then sometimes pick up podcasts on shows I've missed.

I love The Moth.

I wasn't all that enthused about Serial.

Penn's Sunday School - mostly just fun/humor (and of course, lots of name dropping by Penn)...  otherwise focused on libertarianism, atheism, skepticism, a little science, a little objectivism.

These are some I don't think have been mentioned yet:

Criminal (short pieces about strange crimes/defenses)
KCRW's Good Food (Top food centered program imo, not a cooking show, more of a food-issues digest)
KCRW's The Treatment (awesome interviews with Actor's & Directors & Screen writers.)
Love & Radio (outsider, left-field documentaries--check the Pandrogyne or Of Birds and Boundaries.)
Risk (personal stories that run the gamut from dark and gruesome to exuberant ecstasy-- check All-Star Ep. 5)
Roderick on the Line (Hard to describe this one. Two friends in conversation. Essential IMO.)
The Smartest Man in the World (Greg Proops weekly current events commentary with Comedy.)
Stay Hatin' (Low-Bro Trap Rap focused Music show. Think Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, Young Thug.)

Thanks so much for this post!   I am a frequent NPR listener but have never listened to their pod cast or any pod cast for that matter.   But after reading this I will definitely be bluetoothing podcasts.

What is this Serial you speak of?

Skeptic's  Guide to the Universe -- This one is about skepticism, critical thinking, and science. Lead by a neurologist at Yale.

Radical Personal Finance -- Lots of variety in topics (personal finance, entrepreneurship, sustainability). Very long. There are a lot of things I like, but I also prefer when he stays away from politics and gender issues. I skip the parts where it gets very libertarian or goes on about marriage/Christianity/why his wife stays at home with the kids.

Tropical MBA -- Two location independent entrepreneurs. Great if you're interested in entrepreneurship.

The Voluntary Life - Short, but I still like it. Focuses on personal freedom.

Stuff from NPR.

I wish had some entertaining, female focused, non biz/finance podcasts I liked.

When Russ Roberts interviews someone who he doesn't agree with, he perfectly models what I wish political dialogue could be like in this country: an honest attempt to understand the other person's views are and to find common ground.

In the last few months, Radiotopia seems to have really taken off. http://www.radiotopia.fm/
I would call it a collection of well produced presentations of interesting, if eccentric, topics. 99% Invisible especially is amazingly produced.

+1 for Roderick on the Line. I can only describe it as pseudophilosophy with occasional digressions into music.

Skeptic's Guide to the Universe is good, too. I'm on a bit of a hiatus, but mean to pick it up again without worrying about the backlog, because it's very topical and moves quickly.

Others I keep up with and haven't seen so far:

Partially Examined Life (actual philosophy topics and discussion for the academic and novice alike)
On Being with Krista Tippett (spirituality and religion--very thoughtful)
To the Best of Our Knowledge (short interviews around a theme per episode--pretty thoughtful, at once topical and timeless)

Radical Personal Finance - for the FI folks. radical in that he gives you numerous scenarios how to do things, such as suppose you have a networth adding up to 1 mil, how you can have 6 or 7 different ways to reach your spending goals early, dumpster diving, how a walmart employee can become a millionaire, interviews with folks in financial planning field, side hustling, formal financial planning and tax planning(he is a CFP and much more)

Tim Ferris Show - de-constructing the best practices and systems of top performers

NPR Planet Money - very interest summary and investigation into various money topics in entertaining ways

Shawn Stevenson's Model Health Show - very good for health conscious folks with various topics for various problems

Todd Tressider's Financial Mentor - very good show, but he has since stop doing podcasts. but the past ones are good.

Bloomberg Masters in Business - Financial Blogger Barry Ritholtz interviews the giants of money and let them talk about their pet topics uninterrupted

I started a blog to answer this very question! (link in signature)

Over the weekend I wrote a post asking if Criminal was better than Sword and Scale. The fans of S+S turned up in droves to defend their favourite. If you can stand the grisly details, it's very, very good.

Apparently there are 400,000 podcasts on iTunes now, so it'll be some time before I've reviewed them all.

Some I haven't seen mentioned:

* Read-Aloud Revival, about "how to build your family culture around books"
* Homesteady, about homesteading, householding, permaculture, etc.
* Here's the Thing with Alec Baldwin, smart celebrity interviews

Also, not quite a podcast, but if you haven't checked it out yet, Seinfeld's web show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is TERRIFIC:

I also follow APM: Marketplace and APM: Marketplace Weekend, as well as Slate's Double X podcast. I listen to a lot more, but everything else has already been mentioned by others.

Oh, and the next Game of Thrones season is about to start, and I always follow A Cast of Kings for the duration of the season.

So I listened to the most recent FI-oriented radical personal finance on a 90-minute drive between cities last night and I liked it enough but wasn't amazed. It seems like the organization of the site is poor. Does anyone have a few favorite episodes that I can check out to get more of a feel for things, or should I just manually comb through the post history?

Not really.  It's pretty random, so you have to scan through for interesting topics, and even then it can be hit or miss.  A fair amount of rambling, and targeted towards the lower level of knowledge--good for beginners, so I do recommend it to certain people, but IDK that you'd get much out of it with your level of expertise.

Thought of another one to share:

If you like Homesteady, a similar option is Root Simple podcast, which has 40+ episodes about house holding, home ec, frugality and edible. gardening. Enjoyable to listen.
