What do you do on holidays?
« on: May 30, 2023, 08:04:32 AM »
When I take holidays I sort of feel like i'm wasting time and money, not really improving myself in any way etc. Any one else feel like this? Any recommendations?

Investing in joy and leisure *are* investments in yourself.

When you take vacations are you looking more for rest, excitement, sight seeing, cultural experiences?

Ideally what would you want to feel at the end of a vacation? How do you think a vacation should be improving your quality of life?

Also, what are you defining as "productive?" Beyond things that can make you money, that is.

I take vacations to explore new places and I have never been one to take a vacation lying on the beach. I want to be active and see all the architecture and natural beauty a place has to offer.  I always feel that itís worth the money.

As just mentioned, I like exploring a new place. Much of our travel revolves around wondering whether this is an area weíd want to come back to for extended (1-3 months) periods of time.

When we are on holiday, we are generally visiting family, visiting a new location, or hiking in the woods. I see visiting family as maintaining family relationships, visiting new locales as learning about the culture and geography and history of the area, and hiking as improving my mental, emotional, and physical health. None of which are a waste of money, to me, and all of which lead to some sort of improvement, whether itís in my relationships, in the expansion of my knowledge, or in my personal health.

I don't generally have the goal of "improving myself" when I'm on holiday.  I take different types of holidays.  Laying on a beach reading for hours, then taking a long walk over a mile or two of beach, enjoying hte breeze in my hair and the smell of the ocean and my thoughts on what I just finished reading?  Lovely.  Am I "improved"?  Well, I'd say my mood is improved and I'm relaxed and I'm able to think deeply in ways that are challenging when life is intervening all around me.

Then there is "you have 12 days to see as much of Scotland as you can" holidays.  Go, go, go, though even then I usually try to add in at least the occasional leisurely tea or hike to the Faerie Pools or time to sit and look at a gorgeous Loch and ponder the epic beauty.  But the majority of the time is spent learning more about the battle of Culloden at the museum and then walking the grounds to better understand what it might have been like, or hitting up a museum for an hour or two and learning about whatever is in that museum, or tasking whisky and trying to focus on the various tasting notes, or by physically active on a hike.

Are those things "improving"?  Maybe.  But my focus is just on enjoying and that often includes a combination of mental stimulation, pleasant physical exertion, and relaxing (which doesn't mean just sitting and doing nothing--it usually means reading or enjoying great local food or thinking deeply with no distractions).

Thinking about this again, do you feel its a waste because the vacation was someone else's idea and you're tagging along?

Rest and relaxation *is* improving yourself!

You need to learn how to rest and relax and destress from the stresses you encounter in life, and this rest and relaxation period is just as important, if not more so, for your self improvement as the stressful periods of tremendous action.

When you lift weights, you don't lift weights all day everyday forever. You lift until your muscles are stressed and worked out, then you give them proper rest and relaxation and nutrients to recover, adapt, and grow.

Your mind is the same way. Relaxation is improving yourself when you know how to relax. If you push yourself too hard all the time you will just get burnt out.

I just spent my memorial day weekend helping someone move for two days, then relaxing with family yesterday.

I push myself hard - but when I relax...I'm very relaxed. I passed out in my hammock yesterday for an afternoon nap, lol.

Relaxation is self improvement.

Remember, you don't have to be improving yourself every single day. You don't have to be the modern-day spawn of the Protestant Work Ethic. Rest and relaxation are big investments you should make in yourself.

That said, if you don't feel like you're getting good value out of your vacations, there are tons of things you can do:

- Before you leave for travel, read a history or nonfiction book about the destination you're going to
- Book a walking tour in the area
- Visit a museum in every city you go to
- Take a cooking class to learn your destination's local cuisine
- Plan a volunteering trip where you can build homes, do preservation work, or help disadvantaged people
- Use downtime to write in a journal. Reflect on how your year, your work, your relationships, your feelings, and your hobbies are going, and what you can improve about your life.
- Come up with a book idea and write at least one chapter on every holiday
- Try to befriend one local person every time you travel
- Travel somewhere with a different language and try to get competent at that language while you're there
- If you stay at home, plan a home improvement or skill learning project and use holiday time to get closer to completing your objective

Holidays are free time . . . so I do things that I enjoy:

- Play and write music
- Spend more time with my family
- Go hiking in new places with the dog
- Try cooking complicated new foods
- Fix annoying little problems around the house that I've been putting off
- Plan out a multi-day bike trip and do some bikepacking somewhere new
- Visit friends
- Relax and read

@Alchemist If you haven't already read it, Joseph Piper's classic text Leisure: The Basis of Culture might be useful.  I haven't revisited it in twenty years, but the quick summary is that modern western culture has made us great worker bees at the expense of higher virtues best cultivated through leisure.

Usually stay home for holidays. Don't want to travel when everyone else is... Go for bike rides, hike close by, clean house, yard work, cook...

Yep. That. We love being at home and bought it b/c we love the setting. There is porch sitting, reading on the porch, eating/drinking on the porch, napping on the porch. You get the picture.

We both have hobbies we like to dabble in too.

When Iím on holiday during the summer (two months summer holiday each year)Ö

- I go hiking and swimming and kayaking
- I may try out a new recipe
- I read books
- I do puzzles with the family
- I spend lots of time with family, building healthy relationships
- I spend time with family friends, building social relationships
- We visit places and learn about the culture/geography/etc. in the area

Itís all super relaxing and fun, but also, each activity has its own innate benefits for physical health, mental health, cognitive stimulation, developing social relationships, etc. We donít choose activities based on its benefits; we just do them because theyíre fun, and the benefits are a bonus.

My Holidays:
1. Take some days off and just stay in bed for Netflix and food.
2. Go out to meet my friends, maybe cook together instead of eat outside.
3. Go picnic, enjoy the weather (both sunny or rainy)
4. Do some regular study and work. I don't want to spend my holidays very different from my daily life, that will make the end of the holiday too difficult for me.

@Alchemisst So how have your holidays gone this year so far? Do you feel like they have been worth your while?  Have you changed how you vacation or your mindset about it?

I think I think of vacations more in terms of improving my life than improving myself. They tend to be some of my best and most memorable days of the year. I really value using vacation to spend time with friends and family, to get outside and enjoy nature, and to explore places I havenít visited before.

Next year we are taking 2.
Weekend away at a fancy AirBnB on a farm.
Caribbean cruise - possibly our last vacation with just the 6 of us.
