Walmart Plus Worth It? Opinions?
« on: March 13, 2024, 08:01:02 PM »
Here is the context:

I have a walmart credit card that gives me 5% off all online purchases including groceries.

I already like walmart for low prices. When I shop at a regular grocery store I always feel like it is pricey.

I gave up my car and I'm now biking everywhere... but Walmart is really far away since I live downtown.

Walmart Plus is like $99 a year with free grocery deliveries. I'm in the free trial month.

Rough estimate is I spend $250 a month at Walmart and want the free grocery delivery since I don't have a car.

If I get groceries delivered once a week that would mean the $99 a year would be $1.90 per delivery.

I spend 250 a month so with 5% back I save $12.50 a month so I save around $3.00 every delivery. In store I only get 2% back on the card.

Agree with this? It seems like the Walmart Plus membership just kind of pays for itself as long as I get groceries once a week.

Downsides are: I don't get to pick out my produce which I like, sometimes I get low quality produce, they forgot something last time (but refunded it)

Pluses are: It's easy to order, I can still shop at Walmart.

Thoughts?
- should i just go to the safeway regular grocery store around the corner?
- is walmart really that much cheaper to justify this?
- are coupons at stores like these a big deal

Not sure what to do, I might just cancel it after the free month.

We have been using Walmart+ for at least 2 years. Having groceries delivered is a game changer. Pays for itself in no time.

@FrontRanger Good to hear you are getting value out of it. I went to the regular grocery store yesterday and I didn't see myself shopping there as my main source of groceries.

I think I'm be Walmart Plus first, Walk to Trader Joe's for somethings which is kinda far but not impossible, and then midweek grab something i need the grocery store near by.

What about the tipping expectation with Walmart delivery...even with a Walmart+ sub?   There has been a lot of discussion on this topic at other venues, especially Reddit.

I'm assuming you do tip the driver?

We currently do curbside pickup with our Walmart orders.  No Walmart+ required, and no tipping expected.   In fact, an employee turned down a tip when I tried.  This won't work for the OP though as they don't have a vehicle.

@farmecologist

Yes, tipping is a factor. I would previously do pick up but I'm going without a car to see if I want to sell my car. Left it at my sisters and biking is going great so far.

So Walmart delivery can make life really easy. It's going good so far.

From what I've seen they basically use Uber Eats drivers or app drivers in general. It says on the app "Optional" for tipping but I do tip although I'm not going to tip 15%. It's tough because it's not like exceptional service or anything. But I understand the tips probably make an impact for the driver so I do.

Although I used to work at the airport and drive cars for a rental company and was broke but it was my own fault because i didn't want to get a real job and actually work hard. I understand that there are some people who are hard up and don't have a lot of employment options so they have to do something like that. But there are also losers like myself years ago that just don't want to work that hard. If I could find a way to filter them out I wouldn't tip the broke losers like myself.

I'm going to see if I can find that reddit and see what people say. To me it's worth a tip of a few bucks on my $50 order.

But that is a factor in the cost... over a year that weekly tip adds up... but I kind of think just the overall low prices of Walmart kind of make up for it over time.

But who knows... maybe I walk/bike to Trader Joes. Or just bike the 12 miles round trip to the nearest walmart when i need to.

I still have a couple weeks on free trial before the annual fee kicks in

Curious to see where this thread goes as we've been shopping at Aldi as it seems generally cheaper but shopping with kids can be a challenge at times and often leads to extra purchases.

I think Aldi's is great but there isn't one near me. I feel like it's a great store with good bargains.

I think it's a good deal, especially if it means you can sell your car. Even if you don't sell your car it could save time and reduce wear and tear costs.

I was tempted myself but have an Aldi nearby which I find about 15% cheaper, also getting 5% back on groceries from an Amex card (works at Aldi but not walmart).

You might consider a hybrid system of buying fresh produce at a closer grocery but getting everything else from walmart+

We got the HyVee Plus membership last year when it was a Black Friday deal for $27. I never did use the free delivery but I liked that it was an available option. There were quite a few deals and freebies over the year that made it worth it at that price, but I didn’t renew it at the regular price.

You can pay for a lot of grocery delivery and even the occasional Uber if you get rid of the car.
