Vacuum flask recommendations? For coffee
« on: February 21, 2016, 04:07:04 AM »
Hi there

Just wondering if anyone has a particular brand and model of vacuum flask that they'd recommend?

I think I've managed to go a few months without buying any consumer type items, but I met up with a friend for coffee in a park today and he brought some coffee in a mug.  I think a vacuum flask would be a great addition to my life.

My main use would be for taking coffee in my courier bag on my bike and being able to have coffee wherever I go.

I was actually thinking of giving up coffee but it's really my only vice and it does have a rather vice like grip on me!  If I do give up the coffee I could always use it for soup in the winter.

So it would need to be watertight, tough, but wouldn't necessarily need to keep things hot for 12 hours, but would need to keep things hot for about 3 hours at least.

Nissan seem to get some good reviews, but are rather expensive.

I'm located in Australia so may not have access to the many brands available in the US.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Zojirushi. We got them for Christmas a few years ago. They are one of the best gifts we ever received. Available on Amazon. I think ours were ordered from Sharper Image. Seriously keeps coffee hot for the entire day.

Thermos. The name brand has become a household word for a reason. The big flasks wth the handle on the side will keep coffee hot for 24 hours if you open it a lot, 36 if you don't open it.

+1 Thermos. Get the kind that is all metal. (i.e. no glass liner to break.)

I'll second the recommendation for Zojirushi.
My wife has gone through MANY coffee flasks over the years, never happy with any of them (I don't use one).  Luckily we got most of them through gifts, etc.

After doing some research and reading a lot of reviews we bought a Zojirushi one probably 2 years ago now.  She still loves it, it hasn't leaked, it keeps her coffee warm for hours and has held up really well.

Thanks everyone!

I hadn't heard of Zojirushi before. I did some quick research and apparently the rice cookers are available in Oz, but not sure if the flasks are.

Btw, I'm also open to getting something basic and cheap, so long as it does the job.

Pre-frugal Horse would have insisted on the BEST, not realising that the best isn't always necessary and that good enough is often optimal if the job isn't particularly demanding!

We both have Contigos. I am not familiar with the Z-brand, but try to find one with a dishwasher-safe top if you use a dishwasher. Our Thermos one had a top that required handwashing and it was NEVER clean. (We still have it. The only reason I also have a Contigo is that Mr. FP found it in his classroom abandoned after the end of the school year.)

Hmmm, cheapest I can find for a Zojirushi is about $50 for a 12 ounche/350 ml model.

Bit expensive.

Don't have a Zojirushi, but I do have the aforementioned Thermos and two Contigos (gifted to us) - the Thermos goes in the dishwasher and the Contigos can't, so check the individual items to decide.

I'll second the recommendation to get one of the solid metal ones.

I like the REI vacuum flasks, the price is right and they have always worked very well for me.
I have both the small and large models.
The large one is great for long car trips and other outings, the small one is convenient for day hikes and fits in a water bottle cage.

Not sure if you easily and cheaply buy REI products, but usually their REI branded stuff is made by another manufacturer, so you could find what that is and get it on Amazon perhaps.

I recently bought a two pack of Contigo travel mugs at Costco, about $16 U. S.  for both. They keep coffee hot for about 3-4 hours. Lids are dishwasher safe, main canisters are not.  Pushbutton to drink - much faster than unscrewing a Thermos type lid.

Thanks for the continuing recommendations. I'm still reading them.

Pre-focused-frugal misterhorsey would have gone on a intense consumption research bender and researched endlessly all vacuum flasks until he found the PERFECT flasks.

These days i'm just interested in hearing what other people recomend. I realise that my life will be marginally better with a flask, but no massive improvement, and I am letting the ideal flask find me!

I have a Klean Kanteen Insulated 16oz with a wide mouth screw top lid.  It keeps my coffee hot long enough for me to drink it.  One time I left coffee in there with the lid on and it was still hot 6 hours later.  I've had it for 4 years or so now and it's still going strong.

I was about to correct your spelling in an otherwise-wonderful pun, but then I thought Google might spare me from looking the fool. So I googled it, and apparently only people in US and Canada spell it vise.

My Thermos is great. The first time I used it, I opened it after my tea had been sitting for 4 hours and actually burned my tongue.

Ha! Thanks! I'm actually not sure whether the pun was intentional!  I think I may have been very lazy with my writing and seeing as I had the 'vice' word already out on the  mental workbench I probably just used it again rather than get a new word out!

Another vote for Thermos- I have this one and it keeps everything piping hot and has never leaked when I've thrown it in my bike bag: http://amzn.com/B000K604P0

+1 for the solid metal contigo mugs.
Get ones without colour (steel body) and they go into the dishwasher fine.  the others just lose the plastic colour coating.

Get the ones with the lock mechanism.  I can toss it into my bag, upside down, and it still does not leak.  I get mine as gifts from Costco, and the price is a lot less...

Correction!  Canada usage
VISE -- tool on the workbench that you use to grab and hold things you are working on.
VICE -- a shortcoming, "gambling is a vice"... or as in  assistant or deputy role -- 'Vice - Principal"

I currently have a semi-regular meet up with a friend for a coffee and a donut.  He brings the coffee, I bring the donuts.  We used to do this at cafes for $4 a coffee and $5 muffin or whatever, but I've converted him to the free, more beautiful park (at least while the weather is still nice) (https://www.google.com.au/search?q=carlton+gardens&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjOltPyw7LLAhWFOKYKHV6cBGAQ_AUICCgC&biw=1280&bih=743)

He is actually a frugalist without knowing it.

I just realised he brings the coffee in a Klean Kanteen, that his wife got for free when she returned something to a camping store.

I wish thermos flasks rained on me like some of you guys.

Anyone use their hydroflask for hot? We've only used ours for cold. Curious if the metal would play nice with the coffee.

Autumn has kicked in, the weather is cooling and the idea of riding my bike to the park and having hot coffee there is very appealing.

I was at the office works eyeing this little unit for $32.

http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/thermos-stainless-king-vacuum-insulated-flask-470ml-red-thsk2000r

and trying to determine how much of the cost of the thing was due to its attractive exterior, well respected brand and the retailer's margin.

I didn't sense value. So instead, i went to Ikea and got this little number for $5.59.

http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/10292164/

The reviews that I could find are good, and really its role is to manage to keep coffee hot for an hour or so til I get to a park. So the ability to keep something hot for 12 hours is probably overkill.  The construction seems just as decent as the Thermos. It's not as pretty, but perhaps to overcompensate the light pink and bright red combo almost look inappropriately anatomical!

Actually, I like the look. Its got a slight German Democratic Republic 60's vibe...

I've used it once and it kept the coffee hot in a cold park.  It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the other flasks, but i don't actually need them.

Lastly, IKEA have a very generous returns policy so if it leaks or doesn't keep things hot consistently, I can return it with little fuss.

I do value brands as they are often a mark of design quality, good build, reliability etc etc.  And I'm typically ready to pay a premium for it. But its liberating to look beyond the brand sometimes and spend less on something that seems just as well built and most importantly, fit for the purpose for which it is intended.

I'm definitely overthinking a vacuum flask purchase but it sets the framework in which to think about larger purchases.

I'm in Australia and bought my flask from Aldi, it keeps my coffee warm for four hours. You would have to wait until they stock them again but since it's getting colder I assume that will be soon.
