Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Yes, I know SUVs are generally frowned upon around here, but we are looking to buy a used (2007) Highlander Hybrid and I wonder if anyone who has owned one has anything--positive or negative-- to tell us about this vehicle.

Following with interest.

I've got no personal experience with the  Highlander, but my Prius is 12 years old and still runs like new.

Some actual owner reviews here - https://www.edmunds.com/toyota/highlander/2007/consumer-reviews/pg-1/?sorting=CONFIDENCE

I know three people who have Highlanders, and they all love them.

I don't know anyone who has the hybrid, but I would say if you're going to buy one, have the battery checked. They can be tested to make sure they are still in good shape. You may never have to replace the battery, but if you do, it looks like it'll run you close to $5,000 at a Toyota dealer - http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1078138_toyota-hybrid-battery-replacement-cost-guide

i wouldnt be concerned about the battery.  they are made to outlast the engine.  and driving it you should be able to tell if its funcitoning properly.

we have a ford escape hybrid.  its up to 225k miles and still pumping great.  I'm actually looking to switch my wife's non hybrid escape to a highlander hybrid.  for 2 reasons

1. it will get better gas mileage than she gets now
2. we have 2 large dogs and now have a baby on the way so the extra room when we go see her family would be nice.
3. i want to use it to tow my boat around the neighborhood.

Yep tows 3500 lbs too.  Still waiting on a tow vehicle that does 5k and can get 40mpgs or is all electric. Could be revolutionary for the mustachians wanting to do travel trailers

I dunno about 40MPG + 5k lbs, but Ford is planning on launching a hybrid F150 (http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/fuelefficient/ct-ford-hybrid-f150-mustang-20170106-story.html), and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV should be able to tow 3500lbs (rated for 1500kg in UK/AU) whenever it comes here.

I bought a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid two years ago with 81k miles for $11K. Have 118k miles on it now with no problems. This buy was before I was onto MMM so now I would go used Prius or Fit with next purchase.

dont want the 40MPG when towing but when not towing.  shutdown cylinders and what have you
