Title: SouthWest Companion pass promotion
Post by: Aardvark on November 09, 2020, 12:17:45 PM
Hi all,

This promotion seems great. My wife qualifies, and I will be the companion. We will be able to reach the required $4000 expenditure in the first three months.

We have no experience with credit cards (we recently moved to the US) - are there any catches to this sort of promotion? Anything to look out for? Any advice? things worth considering in general?

I can confirm that we will fly on at least 6 one-way flights next year.

The companion pass is a great deal, have had it for the past 3 years. I've generally got it by earning ~110000 points in a calendar year, by opening two Southwest credit cards with sign-on bonuses. You get it for the rest of the year you earn it plus the entire following year.

You do have to pay the TSA security fees for the companion each flight, which I think is $5.60

Is there a new promotion? Because I'm seeing 40,000 points right now on the personal cards, and the business card requires more than $4,000 in spending.

Academic for me until the end of next year, but other people might like to know!

We've done this a couple of times -- one personal and one business card to get us a companion pass.  We recently moved to Canada, though, so Southwest doesn't really help us.  It's a great benefit, though, and we've never had any issues using the passes.
