Title: Simple ways to make a little extra money
Post by: EsLin on May 15, 2015, 08:41:01 AM
What ways do you have to make a little extra money each month without eating up much time at all?

Here are some of the things I do but I'd love to learn more.

- My credit cards pay me (of course! As I'm sure this is the same for all of you). I get either 2% or 5% cash back depending.

- Bing pays me about $5 per month. Referral link if desired (there is already a great thread on this) https://www.bing.com/explore/rewards?PUBL=REFERAFRIEND&CREA=RAW&rrid=_1fafb1a9-9297-b683-788f-5b73476af1be

- An account with Santander pays $20 a month. I have everything funnel through on auto pilot so I can get my money but continue to mostly using my old bank account.

Any other ideas?

(If a thread like this already exists in the forum, I'd love to see it! I've only scratched the surface of all the forum has to offer.)

My side hustles are very much specific to the industry I work in but could probably be classified as "consulting."

I represent my company at events for screenwriters where they can come in, pitch to industry execs and get feedback on their ideas/presentations. I either do this virtually ($2.50 per pitch, average pitch is 5 minutes, approx. $30/hour) or in person ($20-50/hour).

This month I'll bring in about $300 (plus a free lunch!) for 10 hours' work.

Credit card churning has gotten me $5000 per year for the last two years.

I am at $900 for the year so far in checking account bonuses.

I get about $50-75 from Swagbucks every month.

I am always looking for new side hustles. I had six cheap phones ($10 each) that I was using to run Perk TV.  But Verizon started a trade in program.  I sent in all six phones and should get $600 in Verizon credit. Supposedly some Verizon stores sell GoPro cameras, so I plan to buy two of them and sell one on Amazon and keep the other.

Can you post a guide/explain some of these even further. That's crazy impressive. Was it stressful?

For credit card churning, I'd recommend reading the Flyertalk message boards and /r/churning.  Then watch some blogs like The Points Guy or Million Mile Secrets to check for new credit card offers.

http://www.flyertalk.com/
http://www.reddit.com/r/churning
http://thepointsguy.com/
http://millionmilesecrets.com/

For bank bonuses, this is the site to watch: http://www.doctorofcredit.com/

PNC bank has a $400 bonus that just started today.

For Swagbucks, just make an account and each week enter the referral contest at reddit.com/r/beermoney.  If you win, you'll get 100+ referrals in a week.  You'll get 10% of their earnings forever.

It isn't really stressful for me, you just have to be very organized with the credit cards and bank account bonuses.  I have a spreadsheet with the name of the offer, the date I opened it, the minimum spend requirement and the date I need to hit it by, and the date the annual fee will hit.  For checking accounts, you normally need to have a certain amount in direct deposit, sometimes an online bill pay, and then you need to leave a certain amount in for a period of time to avoid account fees.

For example, with Chase I got $300 to open the account after one direct deposit.  Now I just need to leave $1500 in that account for six months to avoid account fees.  After six months I can close the account, and then open another one 3 months later to grab another bonus.

Any way to do a DD without it coming from an employer? I almost did the Chase one, but I don't want to bug payroll with changing over my info for just a month or 2.

You used to be able to trigger a direct deposit by doing a ACH transfer between banks, but they recently changed it so that banks can see more info about the transfer.

You don't think it is worth $300 to go talk to payroll?  Seems pretty easy to me.

It's just that my employer is small and only one person handles payroll. I hate to be "that" guy having them switch my account information back and forth.

You don't have to do your whole paycheck, so it won't be a 'whole switch'.

If you're active on the credit card churning / MS / travel hacking front, you might look into renting out Authorized User spots on your older credit cards (especially ones not seeing much use).  I've made over $2000 since February doing this, with minimal time commitment (phone call to add, phone call to remove). There are some risks involved, but they seem rather manageable from my standpoint.

PM if you're interested in details.

How many people have you made authorized users to make this $2000?  I'd be afraid to be blacklisted from the banks.  I've been making an easy $5k a year from credit cards.

I think I'm going to make enough money with swagbucks that I have to claim it on my taxes....

I've been pretty happy with them.  It does take time, but I use it to decompress at the end of the workday.

I wish I could get some more referals, as that really boosts the totals.

A total of 15. No more than 3-4 per card at a time. I've talked with the company, they've not had any shutdowns as long as their contractors limit the number of AUs active at any time to less than 5.

I've done all sorts of random stuff to make money, especially when I was making less. Now that I make a high salary I have lost some of the motivation. I did freelance writing and editing, made about $50-$60 a month with minimal effort. I have done freelance IT projects, make maybe $500-$1500 a month, depending on how much time I wanted to devote to it. Plus the traditional stuff like helping people move for $50, spending a weekend setting up desks, chairs, and PCs in a new call center for ~$150.

If you have time there is always someone out there wanting to pay you to do something.

How do you (or I, or anyone else) find these 'someone out there wanting to pay you do do something'?!?

Depends on what you are looking for. Freelance writing I got into almost on accident when just blogging, for free, about sports and politics. People contacted me about writing and eventually editing. freelance IT projects have come from former classmates who send me work, or former co-workers. Some of it has been stuff I've gotten through freelance websites.

I like Swagbucks. I get the $5 Amazon cards since they're the cheapest and I use them to buy pet food, coffee, etc. Offsets my grocery bills a bit. Even $10 is $10!

They actually changed it recently and no longer have the cheap $5 Amazon cards.  You can get one $25 Amazon card each month though for 2250 swagbucks.

When out and about look down at your feet. We seem to find money every time we go out. A nickel here, a quarter there. Amazing how much we really find considering the fact that we don't go out that often.

I have a couple hustles that aren't big money makers but they are simple. They're all apps on your phone and most of them are for iPhone and Android.

Rewarded for working out by Pact: http://www.gym-pact.com/ (http://www.gym-pact.com/) - It pairs with RunKeeper and/or you can log in at your gym. It only pays about $.25 per workout, but it keeps you motivated because you get charged $5 if you don't meet your pact for workouts per week. I've made over $150 since I started using it.

Take pictures of your receipts with Receipt Hog: referral http://app.receipthog.com/r/log86125 (http://app.receipthog.com/r/log86125), non-referral http://receipthog.com/ (http://receipthog.com/) - Take pictures of receipts from grocery stores, department stores, etc. and you earn points towards PayPal cash or Amazon gift cards. It's also helpful for having a digital copy of your receipt when you're going back to categorize Mint transactions. I probably average about $5-10 per month.

Two question surveys from the Google Opinion Rewards App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.paidtasks&hl=en (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.paidtasks&hl=en) - This is only for Android users and you only get paid in Google Play credit (I use mine for ebooks and apps), but they'll send 3-4 short (<30 seconds) surveys per week that pay about $.15-.45 each. I've made about $25 so far.

Short surveys about the places you've visited with Panel App referral http://www.placed.com/panel/panels/711b0c40f1da/signup?rid=34e6548a535d (http://www.placed.com/panel/panels/711b0c40f1da/signup?rid=34e6548a535d), non-referral https://www.placed.com/panel-app (https://www.placed.com/panel-app) - Answer quick questions about the places you've visited and earn points that can be redeemed for PayPal cash or Amazon gift cards. I make about $5 per month doing this.

I got real interested in trying to offset the cost of my phone when I first got a smartphone so there are a few other decent apps if people are interested.

Convince spendy friends/relatives who use Amazon to sign up under your referral link!  Easy sell, as they get 4 swagbucks per dollar (basically 4% cash back).

Selling my childhood comics on e-Bay this year.  Monumental task considering it's 2,000 books.  Sure, it'd be easier to sell them all for $1K and just get them out of the house, but I figure there's no rush.  Selling the valuable issues and sets separately is the only way to get top dollar.  It's making me about $325 a month for a few hours work.  I'm losing money everywhere on the profits but (I think?) it's still the best way to do it (short of renting a table at a convention)--eBay takes its 10% from everything, they encourage you to post in US dollars, PayPal takes a collection fee, PayPal takes a conversion fee for me to convert the money to Canadian to transfer it to my bank.

Perk is making me about $2 a day with 5 phones. Much less than it used to, but especially for Americans, you can get ok phones off ebay for $10-15. Or from Target/Walmart.

I like HTC Thunderbolts with cracked screens, and ZTE Zingers.

My referral is http://perk.fm/4j4ff

Oh yeah, and again for Americans, you can get a Discover debit card called Perk Plastik... if the gift cards don't appeal.

Um. Oh yeah, also usertesting.com. $10 for 15 minutes - when tests are available.

Selling clothes/jewlery at consignment stores, pawn shop, garage sales and Kijiji (in Canada).  Sold over $1000 in household stuff since I started reading this blog in March.  $1400/mth with AirBnb which was also a lot of fun.  So many people shy away from renting out rooms but it was great social time for me.  I met so many interesting people from all around the world.  Highly recommend it!
I house/pet sit.
I'm a little worried because I don't think I have anything else to sell; I wasn't a big consumer before.  My kids are more worried!  lol

Pretty much do the same thing.  I am not sure it will work for you, but eBay store subscription is $15 a month and reducing Final Value Fees for certain categories.

I am kind of going a bit nuts thinking of ways to earn extra money- I can seriously list about 40 micro-business ideas. But they are all typical of my skills and interests- making hand-made wedding veils or making custom jewelry (I have a ready market) or selling upcycled stuff ("shabby chic") at the flea market each week. But they are modest time committments, not passive.

I am seriously considering offering a room on AirBnB, though, just trying to get comfortable with the idea. In my area rooms go for about $40-50 Cdn a night. Totally worth it.

I have dozens of ideas for Kindle books but I write constantly for work which seems to tap me out a little and have not yet churned out a Kindle book in spite of having all the prep done.

There are lots of awesome ideas here!  Many thanks for the recommendations.  I'll need to check out the bank sign-up bonuses; we did a Chase one for about $450 a few months ago.  Now that I've shut that account down, I'm ready for a new one.

Not sure if this applies, but I'm looking into RelayRides, which is P2P auto renting.
I have 2 motorcycles so most of the year my car sits most of the time - often a week at a time.

I've done a lot of googling on it, and found;
It seems like I could make $3.5k - $4.5K a year; but that's NOT counting depreciation and wear and tare on my car.
Mini Coopers make real good money, but possibly a regional thing.
Teslas are easy to rent out, but no mention of profit.

I really wish I could find an owners forum - I found an Uber driver forum where a guy posted that he rented cars on RelayRides to drive w/ Uber when his car broke down.

The math (w/o depreciation and wear and tare...) says I could even by another used car and recoup my investment in about a year.

I think it'd really help my auto renting to have a folding E-bike so I could offer drop-off and pick-up (by putting the E-bike in the trunk), but they start at $1,000...  so I'm probably going to start with a folding peddle (only) bike.

I make stamped cuffs and keychains and will one day make pendants/necklaces and can sell them at the flea market, to people at work (helps to have a laminated product sheet with pics, leave it in the kitchen), to my women's group as Xmas rolls around, even on certain Facebook groups

Amazon Mturk is my #1 for making extra cash. I started in February of this year and have made about $2300 so far. I don't really do it consistently and sometimes lose motivation, but it really is a solid way to earn some extra dollars each month. I think it's currently only available in the US and you have to be 18+.

I also like using Apptrailers in idle time. I make maybe $5/month doing it but it's easy and the Paypal payouts are pretty much immediate.

Have tried Swagbucks, Inboxdollars, Bing but I find them too cumbersome and time consuming to use consistently. The time is better spent on Mturk.

When I can get real freelance gigs too I always take them, but those opportunities have dried up lately.

I sell clothes and household items I no longer on Ebay. Most of my maternity clothing sold quickly after my baby was born which was awesome.

I also really like ebates. Refferal link: http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=4%2BTJCr%2FLdwnNyH7bh8dpZg%3D%3D&eeid=26471 (http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=4%2BTJCr%2FLdwnNyH7bh8dpZg%3D%3D&eeid=26471)
You get cash back on online purchases. I use it in conjunction with coupon codes I get on retailmenot.com for extra savings.

I'm reluctant to credit card churn at this point in my life for fear of messing with my credit score (maybe buying a house soon?). So I just use a capital one venture card for 2% rewards. I initially signed up and got a bonus so that was nice.

I have used Swagbucks but I find the tasks to be a little mundane. It would be OK if I was stuck in front of the computer screen anyway. I think most people that do well with this are benefiting from referrals.

I am trying out a few apps that give cash back on groceries/in store purchases, but I only have about a month of experience so far so I can't say if I would recommend them or not. I think they will just return a few dollars a month at best though because my spending mostly falls under groceries, baby supplies and the occasional gift.

I would like to do something along the lines of a very small business that I could handle from home but I'm still searching for the right idea...

Yes, hold off on churning if your buying a house. I doesn't effect your score much but you still want to wait till after the purchase to start churning.

I'm curious what kind of time you're putting in to get kind of payout, and if you have suggestions for how to get the most out of mturk.   I tried it for a while last  year and found most of the tasks very time consuming for the remuneration offered, not to mention kind of miserable tasks! Maybe I'm just not cut out for it, but I put in a solid effort for a couple of weeks and I think my total payout was something less than $10.

Maybe I'm just not cut out for it, but I put in a solid effort for a couple of weeks and I think my total payout was something less than $10.

The time I put in ebbs and flows. Some weeks I'll just hang out after work on the couch doing it, or bunker down inside on weekends and do it. I do work a f/t 10-6 job though so I am certainly not at it all day. I guess I could range from anywhere to 1 minute a day to 4-5 hours a day, depending. Some days I don't log on at all.

The biggest tip I have is to use scripts. It's impossible to find anything good just by searching on mturk.com. Turkmaster, turkopticon (for reviews of requestors--I only work for reliable ones), and HitScraper help me get the good stuff. Forums like Mturkgrind and HitsWorthTurkingFor are also great.

I also don't focus on the payout of an individual task. It's how much time it takes. The base acceptable rate for me and more turkers is 10 cents/minute. Yes, this is below min. wage but I can do with work in the comfort of my home whenever I feel like it, and find it pretty easy.

Your numbers matter too. The more hits you have approved, the more you qualify for. I do penny hits to get my numbers up. 1k, 5k, and 10k approved are the general benchmarks. Sounds like a lot but if I can bang out 200 penny hits in about 10 minutes, it adds up quickly.

Also, I like qualifying for the academic studies that are done over a period of days or weeks. I recently did one that was 5 days long and the initial qualifier that took about 2 mins paid .50. Then each day a follow up question took about 30 secs and paid .5. If you competed them all, a bonus of $5. I probably spent less than 10 mins on the whole study over the week so it was a nice little payout.

Last thing for now: turkopticon will help you weed out the requesters that pay very little for your time. If a survey pays 25 cents and takes 20 minutes, that requestor will be bombarded with negative reviews.

After reading about card churning, I went online and googled it for Canada. I am flabbergasted. Is it that easy? For somebody like me who is  uber-organized (Type A when it comes to things like this) I have already identified 3 cards (for each of us) that would return about $850 before 6 months is up....and was only when comparing about 15 cards...I haven't even looked at the whole shebang. My husband and I are sitting here actually thinking that this is pretty weird...not something we are used to thinking of as a "money maker". Whee!  I will post about how it goes and how I feel about it.

Here is the site I found for comparing Canadian CC offers.

It's pretty easy, at least in the US. I've gotten at least 4 roundtrip flights from CC offers. I have another 100,000 miles from offers I haven't used yet. I've also made a few hundred bucks from checking account offers. Biggest thing to watch out for are annual fees. Usually waived the first year. So if I open a card on Feb 1st, I'll put a reminder on my Google Calendar to cancel it on Jan 1st the next year.

Dropping by for the notifications. Unfortunately some of these ideas are not available in Europe.

In Canada we don't get the same offer for opening chequeing accounts...not at all.  And the # of CC offers seem to be fewer and less robust. Just applied for a VISA from Scotiabank that will give $100 toward statement if $500 is charged in first three months. Annual fee of $99 waived for first year. Going to get my husband to do the same. While spending the $500 there is 4% on gas and groceries...less on other items.

Next is a $75 cash back to spend $1500 over six months...high cashback percentages there too.

See my sig for extra bonuses on signing up. Also, if you get Amex cards, you can refer your partner for a better sign up bonus than the GCR ones. Also check RedFlagDeals for hidden offers - eg there is a 50k points link for the Chase Marriott card, vs 30k normally. I was just looking tonight actually, 10k points gets a night in a hotel thats normal rate is $230. I'm absolutely sure you could get a room cheaper elsewhere, but at face value that single sign up could be 'worth' $1k.

If you're US based and have a number of cards open, renting out authorized user slots can be a solid source of extra income. I get an extra $250-500 per month this way.
