SAMs Club vs Costco
« on: October 03, 2015, 11:42:09 AM »
Does anyone here feel strongly one way or the other? I currently have a free SAMs Club membership through my fathers work, but I have been told multiple times by friends and coworkers that Costco is much better. I went with a friend the other day to see for myself, but was rather unimpressed, so I guess I'm wondering if there is anyone here that swears by Costco and why? Same if you love SAMs club, or anything else!

I don't have a SAMs club in my area so can't compare the two but I will say that I don't find most thing at Costco to be that great a deal, unless you are running a restaurant or something. However the reason the membership still pays off for me is:

- I save a lot on rental cars through Costco, even compared to the various discount rental sites. I use this several times a year.
- I save on movie tickets - don't go out to the movies often, but the movie "gift cards" for my local theater at Costco are 20% off.
- Doesn't happen often, but when my car needs tires I save a lot at Costco.
- There are a few food items I find that Costco has good prices on. The key is to only look at things you would normally buy anyway.

What do you think is the average savings on tires if bought through Costco vs. someone like Discount Tire?

I see decent fuel savings through Costco, usually, without having to play the grocery store "fuel points" game. Other things I buy there regularly: $5 large rotisserie chickens, $10 large bags of coffee beans, dried fruit.

I have a Sam's Club membership, if only for their rotisserie chickens...  If anyone's compared both, I'd love to hear about it.  Our Sam's club moved to a very inconvenient location for me, and Costco is opening this winter very close by.

Costco has a great return policy, though. I don't think Sam's comes close.

Costco has very high quality stuff in general, Sam's is a Walmart entity.
If I could pick I would have absolutely no doubt where to go (Costco)

Ditto.  I go to Costco because I don't want Wal-Mart to own the entire retail world...

I've never been to SAMs Club, so I can't comment on the quality of their products.  The only reason I'm keeping my membership at Costco is because they pay their employees decent wages, plus benefits.

Costco beats Sam's hands-down for me.

Even if Sam's is slightly cheaper for something, overall quality is always better at Costco.  Except for glasses lens wipes, they screwed that one up.  Get Zeiss wipes somewhere else.

Costco's return policy is perfection.  Once bought a box of oranges and one of them was half-rotten.  They refunded me cash instantly with no hassle.

Costco has employees that give a damn, because they're paid well.  Not the case at Sam's.  My dad (optometrist) used to work at a Sam's for about 10 years, and almost none of the normal Sam's employees ever stayed more than a year.

I have been a member at both, and overall I think Sam's was significantly cheaper.

It also have fewer health food options iirc.  And having been at Costco now for over a year I'm not sure I would go back to Sams for reasons previously stated.

Gas is cheap at both places.

I am currently a member of both, which I recognize is an un-Mustachian splurge. I like them both for different reasons. Sam's is closer to my house and there are certain products I tend to buy more there. They often have discounted meat, so I buy that there. Their diapers are significantly cheaper than Costco. I prefer their hot dogs (Nathan's FTW!). I also prefer their clothes, and they tend to discount them more often than Costco's. I have never scored the deep clearance things at Costco that I have at Sam's. For instance, I only buy my wrapping paper at Sam's after it is marked down more than 50% after Christmas.

I prefer the experience at Costco better, as the employees are treated better and therefore are more friendly and overall chirpy. They also have a much better return policy. As far as products, Costco has more organic, so if that your thing, you should go to Costco. Their loaf bread is also cheaper and better quality than Sam's. The 2 lb block cheese is a great value, as is their decaffeinated coffee. Costco has better toys at Christmas. In general, their home items are of better quality, and we often buy name brand shoes for $19.99. They also have a $14.99 flu shot, which is as cheap as it gets if you can't claim it on insurance. Also, their eye glasses are super cheap.

As far as pricing, it can change from week to week, so you have to watch. For a while, string cheese was cheaper at Sam's, but now it's significantly cheaper at Costco. I usually play their sales off each other. I.e. if I need ketchup and it's on sale at Sam's that month, I buy it there. I have three kids, so we go through a lot of snack foods like goldfish. I just buy whatever is on sale.

To sum up, I like both, but if Costco was closer to my house, I would likely drop Sam's once my last kid is potty trained. The more pleasant atmosphere of Costco is enough to sway me towards them instead of Sam's, even though I would miss a few products at Sam's.

Great thread, as we are in this situation. Sam's is closer and we have historically gone there. Due to reasons I am unclear on, DH's mother pays for his membership there. To be clear-we did not ask her to do this and she may discontinue this at any time. However, it's some sort of linked thing so that I can't go by myself, only with him.
The Costco is further away but not so horrible that I wouldn't consider it (25 min or so vs 10 for Sam's). However, not sure how worth it a membership would be. I kinda can't see going each week for veggies and fruit, which is much of our groceries. We buy local meat shares for that, and some bulk grains/beans so most of our groceries are weekly things like produce and milk. My parents go to Costco though so maybe I'll revisit it esp for bread. Or just flour and make my own bread...

Like JustAJane the G/F and I have both memberships, Costco and Sams Club.  Costco is now closer to our house and we shop there a lot, we upgraded to the premium card, we spend enough to pay for our membership and we leverage the Costco American Express card and that also help offsets shopping there.  We only buy what we will use so we do not get trapped into buying shiny stuff just because it is a good Price.  We have a Sam's club membership because we once lived closer to Sam's Club and it made more sense.  But we find we like Costco better and seldom shop at Sam's any longer.  So we maybe dropping the Sam's club membership this year.  I agree the employees at Costco are friendlier, they have a better return policy and I think the quality of items there are better.  Since Costco is close to our home we buy almost all fuels there.  I don't find tires to be any cheaper and the selection is more limited but I have always had great service from Costco tire shops so I have been happy with my purchases there.

I'm a Costco member now and was a Sam's member in the distant past.  I swear by Costco, hands down.

This is because:
(1) Costco has a no-hassle return policy.  I've used it to return tax software that did not work, fruit that rotted too soon, and a jacket with a grommet that popped off after I'd owned it for awhile (but on the first wash).
(2) Glasses, prescriptions, and immunizations are a fantastic deal.
(3)  Costco pays a living wage, and I like supporting that.
(4)  There are innumerable healthy food options at Costco.  (They are now the largest purveyor of organic food).
(5)  They double the warranty and have a concierge service on electronics (comes in handy when you buy a computer.)
(6)  Costco has clothes that my husband and I can wear to work.

I love the "one stop shop" nature of Costco.  We probably go every couple of months and stock up.  My time is limited and I prefer cutting down on time spent doing errands.  We can usually time a Costco trip with other travels so don't waste gas or time.

Yes, the Kirkland button down shirts are a really great value for $17.99. They look like they cost more than that and wear well.

When I moved down to Va Beach 2 years ago I did a comparison between Sam's Club, BJ's and 1 other place (I forget), but when comparing food items, especially meat and dairy, Sam's Cub was always the cheapest.  I had a list of like 40 of our staples and Sam's Cub was almost always cheaper.  I didn't do the comparison to Costco b/c it was too far away, but I'm sure it would probably be the same story.  Agree w/the comments above regarding Costo being a "better store" and better to their people and all that stuff, and the Kirkland quality may be a bit higher.  But if your bottom line is cost, Sam's Cub wins almost always (or did when I compared 2+ years ago).

Sam's Club has better beer, hand's down. But Costco has a much better value on wine, although I would say the wine selection at Sam's is also good. It just costs a lot more.

Oh, and Costco TP is cheaper and lasts a lot longer. We usually buy Kirkland TP, but once we were in Sam's and bought their Member's Mark brand. It was extremely soft and nice, but we went through it twice as fast.

Costco made-to-order cakes are cheaper and taste better. I mean, you really can't beat a big decorated sheet cake for $19.99. But other than that I prefer Sam's bakery for sweets, mainly because the rest of the items like cookies and cheesecakes are cheaper and taste about as good.

Also, the nut selection at Costco is better and by and large cheaper.

The more I think about it, if you have both in town like I do and have a larger family, it might actually make sense to have memberships at both. If Costco has some staples significantly cheaper over the course of the year than Sam's, as well as the reverse, then over the course of the year you could make back both memberships.

My folks have a Sam's membership through my dad's business and I have a Costco membership. I've been to Sam's with him, and my mom has been to Costco with me, and she and I both agree that Costco is the better option in terms of organic and healthy food choices. So, if that sort of choice is important to you, I would go with Costco. Seriously, the amount of savings from the organic spinach we buy at Costco has paid for our membership over and over again.

I don't have a large family, but the two stores are literally less than 1/2 mile away from each other. I don't pay for the SAMs membership, so I think making up just the Costco membership would not be that hard.

Yeah, their organic and produce section is by far the cheapest I've seen around. It might be worth it just for produce.

Costco.

For us, here's why: several stores close by, very good quality, they narrow down selection which is a win in my book, great cheese and "luxury" item selection at wholesale prices means I can indulge my love of Humbolt Fog occasionally, unbeatable return policy, Kerrygold butter, high priority given to sourcing organic/local, Kirkland Signature = incredible value, every single time, employees treated and compensated fairly, KS olive oil is ACTUAL olive oil, Costco honey is ACTUAL honey, at a corporate level they are "local" to us so the executives are helping the local economy, the buffalo mozzarella makes we weep with joy it's so delicious, insurance/travel/service side stuff is great, customer service is consistently excellent, top selection of wine, the KS creamy blue cheese is so good I swell with pride (My family comes from the Wisconsin dairy industry), meds/prescriptions are sold at a very fair price. Finally, they aren't Walmart.

Oh, and did I mention cheese?

We bought a microwave oven there, got a 2 year warrantee (doubled from manufacturer), and after close to 4 years use one day we turned it on and it puffed smoke and died.  My wife took it back (she probably had the receipt, she is very organized that way) and despite being WAY out of warrantee they gave full purchase price credit against a new one.  We now regularly buy electronic type stuff there if we can, they are much better than Best Buy for returns.   I wish they still carried the ZT computers, those were pretty good for a prebuilt, and had good support when we needed it.

Sale prices on some items at other places can beat them out, but you would have to be very on top of sales to do better, and willing to shop at multiple places.

Well, a ringing endorsement from a Cheesehead counts for a lot!  Yeah - I could go on about the cheese.  Costco just introduced huge chunks of Comte.

There is one and only one reason we currently choose Sam's over Costco:  The nearest Costco is 2 hours away.

When we lived in a city that had both: Costco won hands down.  We preferred their selection, the employees seemed more helpful/happier, and their return policy is just stupid ridiculous.  (Oh, after 5 years you decided you don't like this shade of blue?  We are so sorry, let's exchange that for you.)

I've heard that costco deliberately tries to market "up" from Sams - and part of this is they are NOT shy about giving shelf space to what are, basically, luxury goods - wine, high end cheese, organics, etc.

I love it. Although I do have to ration myself a bit to not buy ALL THE CHEESE in one go. :D

Ditto LL Bean.  Stand by their products.  I love the free return shipping and monogramming with their credit card.  Had to return a pajama shirt due to a rip at the button and they returned the $ spent on the set (including pants) as they could not fix it.  Just wish they had more retail stores (none in my state).

Patagonia - Expensive but I love their products.  They will repair them so the clothes I buy I expect to have a long life.  They also are very good stewards to the environment and to fair trade organizations.  With all the problems with retail clothing, they stand out.

Ting Mobile has been good for us.  Always quick to help, very affordable plan that meets our need, and they have a policy in place to not charge for the higher bucket if you have 5% overage in a category (which is easy to do by mistake).

Costco is a higher quality at a low price. Sams Club might be cheaper in some areas, but it's with a lower quality product in my opinion. For clothes, I might not care. However, when I put stuff into my body, I care.

Costco. Hands down. Fantastic return policy. Bought windshield wipers and one failed after three months. No receipt and no packaging but they gave me my money back (customer purchases track with your customer card).Costco  treats their employees well and the people working there seem to enjoy their job.  SAMs club is just a warehouse Walmart and I am not a Walmart fan.

Many, many of the products these two warehouses sell are exactly the same, though. Case in point off the top of my head, and these are all products I have experience buying at both: almost all snack foods (crackers, chips, goldfish), etc., peanut butter (JIF), feta cheese, tomatoes on the vine, bananas, salad mixes, cucumbers, string cheese, etc. I'm sure I could go on. I shop at both weekly.

Regarding clothes, they both sell Levis, Adidas, and Carter's. Except for the Kirkland dress shirts, the clothes at

I prefer Costco too, but you're just flat out wrong on most of Sam's products. If you want organic, yes, go to Costco, but for the non-organic shopper, the main difference between the two is the more pleasant shopping experience at Costco.

This is totally apples and oranges.

Costco sells quality high-end merchandise, caps its profit margins even though it pisses off Wall Street, and pays its employees living wages and actual benefits. It's the nation's No.1 seller of wine and No.3 seller of books, which tells you much about its demographics.

Sam's is Wal-Mart with a cover charge.

We have a second-home/rental property in VA Beach. I love - love - Costco, but hate having to go to the Norfolk Costco. Not only is it a haul, but it's the worst one I've ever been to in terms of customer service, etc. Just awful. Gives Costco a bad name. When are they going to put one in VA Beach already?

Costco. Even when I had a lot less money, it was Costco, and I mainly shop for groceries, household cleaning items, and motor oil there. I also use my membership over in Canada occasionally and that is nice. They have some of the best poutine, surprisingly enough.

I bought a cruise through Costco Travel and the customer service was top notch. We got a great price, a good room credit, and a very unexpected specialty dining credit which was awesome.

I love their cakes, but they are just way too big for a family of three. Even when we had my daughter's bd party, we had 8 kids to feed, had 1/4 sheet and we got through just about half of it. But man, that 7lb chocolate cake is incredible. I just wish it came in a half portion. Maybe if my whole family was on the dirtiest bulk ever and that was all we were eating for 3 days...lol!

Sam's has/had some sort of buy-one-get-one-free-or-really-cheap membership option - perhaps a special promotion? We got one via my parents.

I actually prefer Sam's, but Costco/BJ's are a lot closer.

Costco. Largely because Wal-Mart ate my hometown and I hate them, but we've had nothing but good experiences with Costco and I feel better knowing that the people working there aren't being screwed.

I see decent fuel savings through Costco, usually, without having to play the grocery store "fuel points" game. Other things I buy there regularly: $5 large rotisserie chickens, $10 large bags of coffee beans, dried fruit.

We just bought tires. We saved about $70

Sam's Club for sure.

I personally like Costco... but there just aren't enough stores around the country for me to justify the membership. Furthermore, they generally don't allow overnight parking, which is a 100% deal breaker.

I had a membership for 1yr to Costco, so got to compare prices. I found that for what I buy, Sam's Club was cheaper. Costco has a higher end product (or at least it is marketed that way). I ended up getting the membership refunded, it just wasn't going to work.

Also in that year, I was told there wasn't overnight parking at all but one location I visited. That was what really did it for me. But your needs will undoubtably be different.

I'd say Sam's Club,
If you like the window dressing or need to feel like you are important when you shop then Costco is your place.  They do pay for a higher skilled workforce that will make you feel nice when you're there.  If you'd prefer to save money so you can raise your standard of living and retire earlier then go to Sam's.

I have a Sam's Club membership for my side business.  It wouldn't be worth the money otherwise.  I had a Costco membership for a while, but they didn't carry all the stuff I needed for my business.

Costco seems to have a lot more organic products if you prefer to shop organic.  If you buy potato chips and the like then Costco doesn't do well there.  Costco seems worse than Sam's Club on bringing in new products and then never having them again.  I find food can often be less expensive at Aldi than either Sam's Club or Costco if you buy canned goods and the like.  Costco can be cheaper if you tend to cook from raw products instead of cans and the like.
