Budget app for spreadsheet people?
« on: January 08, 2020, 01:03:17 PM »
Does anyone have recommendations on a budget app for people who use spreadsheets generally but just want to track daily expenses easily? We've been using YNAB, not "correctly" - we claim our income for the month is whatever we budget, then we fill it out as we spend, then at the end of the month we zero the budgeted categories and balance to 0 so that nothing carries over. Convoluted but it's the simplest I've come up with for what we want. But the version of YNAB we've been using won't be supported once I update my computer and the newer version wants to be your full budget. I couldn't figure out how to use it more simply. We really just need a spreadsheet with a nice phone interface. Our full budget for the year (broken down by months) is in a google spreadsheet and these daily spending type categories (groceries, household items, etc) all go into a line on the big budget.

So....any ideas? Need further explanation? It's a bit confusing.

I would look into Tiller HQ:  https://www.tillerhq.com/

Good luck!

I’m doing basically this same thing with Personal Capital. NW I track on spreadsheet, and so I only linked my credit card to Personal Capital so I can easily see how much spending in each category (grocery, travel, car, etc.) I’ve done for the month.

Google sheets + fillable form. Bookmark the form on your browsers and smartphones/tablets/whatever. Done.

I use Tiller, and have had great success with it.  Of course, I made a living as a spreadsheet nerd, so it works great for me.

I even went one step further and used my spreadsheet as a data source for PowerBI (a business intelligence platform) to get some cool visualizations.  See my prior post on the topic at:

Depending on your level of patience, Microsoft is coming out with a service to directly connect Office 365 to your financial institutions.  See https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-excel-money-in-excel/

I am anxiously awaiting this release.  It has been coming "soon" for a while now, so who knows when it will actually be available.

If you want to keep using old YNAB on your new operating system, check this out. At least for the Macintosh, you can run the conversion and it will run on Mac OS Catalina.

So, as a YNAB user who use to run YNAB4 and made the switch over to nYNAB, my question is: Why not just make the leap and alternate your budgeting so you only spend money you own? Having more in checking than you need for the month is extremely mustachian. And YNAB is pretty dang customizable from a budgeting standpoint.

How I use it:

The wife and I are two month ahead budget-wise. When I get paid, I drop that amount into YNAB and add it into my budget for whatever month it'll be used for. At the end of the current month I zero out anything I don't want to carry over to next month.

I had to change some of my spreadsheet methods to get it to fit exactly right, but it's made budgeting really simple and straight forward and I've never had trouble getting it to do what I want it to do.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
