Portable Car Refrigerator Recommendation needed
« on: May 13, 2024, 01:26:39 PM »
I wanted to see if anyone had a portable car refrigerator they could recommend.  I'm getting kind of tired of messing with ice in an ice chest when I travel.

Most of the inexpensive ones hold too little for the space they take up. How many days are you looking to keep things cold? How much vehicle space do you want to devote to it?

We use those freezer ice packs instead of ice. No mess.

It could be for a weekend or for a week.  Just for road trips in general.

maybe i'll try the ice packs, i get tired of the pool of water that accumulates and everything getting wet.

It's been a few years, so I don't know how accurate this info is anymore... but Alpicool had a tiny cult following as a poverty-friendly option for people who couldn't afford a Dometic there in the Prius camping community with their top load 12V coolers, IIRC, as they're reasonably priced for the sizes and offered a 3 year warranty on certain models. Like, 48qt single temperature zone models with battery backup for under $300-ish prices. Cheaper than a Yeti, but nothing's built as good as it used to be for the price anymore... so, YMMV.

This said, if you've got a decent cooler and you're looking into ice packs, you can make your own for way cheaper using something called KoolerGel powder. Use it in six washed out 2qt Old Orchard/Ocean Spray boxy juice containers using DI water (to help keep things sterile and from growing anything if they're kept thawed for a while) for a dense rectangular box form factor. I've tried doing online recipes for DIY cooler gel packs, and the stuff always thawed out nearly as fast as ice. I've found the KoolerGel stays frozen/cold for a lot longer, and the size of the bottles are convenient for cooler usage. That exact set-up, in fact (the six Old Orchard bottles with KoolerGel), is what I used when I used to go camping - coupled with a modified Coleman Xtreme lined with Reflectix and insulation pucks that would fit in the lid drink holders. The longest I pushed that setup in normal usage was about 72 hours (spring in the shade) with just the six bottles, and there was still frozen chunks in the bottles and ambient was still under 40°F at the bottom, and alternately pushed that same setup during a week without power during an ice storm, and made it until day six before we lost some of the frozen meat on the outer edge with it sitting in the garage, and there was still soft frozen toward the center of the container. Inflation's been rough, but I don't think I spent more than $80 for the whole setup about a decade ago. I'd just recommend under-filling the bottles by a couple ounces since the stuff does expand when it freezes.

Ask around for someone who gets meal kit delivery. The big ice packs in those can be refrozen and keep stuff cold a long time.

Put water in water bottles then freeze them. Leave space in the bottle so it doesn’t burst. It will last longer than small cubes and you can just re-freeze the bottle after it melts.

For a big cooler I like 1/2 gallon milk jugs. For a small cooler you can use bottled water bottles or bottles you buy just for freezing.

For shorter trips, we freeze water bottles and drink them as they melt. For longer trips, the gel ice packs work well.

I have this one - https://www.costway.com/55-quarts-portable-thermoelectric-electric-car-cooler-refrigerator-for-beverage.html
Works good, no issues.  Had is for several years.  Much easier than dealing with a cooler.  I usually leave it full-time in my suv loaded up with drinks, snacks, etc.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
