House Sitting
« on: February 20, 2016, 10:28:38 AM »
We took two longish vacations last year -- 3 weeks one time and 2 weeks another. Both times we had a house-sitter come and stay at our place -- the first time primarily to take care of the garden, the second time to watch the garden and the dogs. Both times we used the same couple, who we found through http://www.housesittersamerica.com. They are coming back to sit for us a month this fall.

They did a great job of looking after the house, cutting the grass, watering the garden, walking the dogs and keeping them company, and when we came home, the house was cleaner than it had ever been. And you can't beat the price -- free. In exchange for the privlege of staying in your home rent-free, they look after everything.

Though we have used the same couple all three times, I wouldn't hesitate to use the service again. You post an ad on the site with your general location and dates you need covered, and anything special you need the sitter to do (such as look after animals). Sitters contact you if they are available. It helps if you have a nice place in an area people like to visit. I got 14 responses within hours of posting my ad.

The couple we have used do this full time -- they sold their house and most of their belongings, put the rest in a Prius and are on their second year as nomads. He works IT full-time, but remotely. They have stayed in great places all over the US (including a couple of stints in Hawaii). So this might be a viable path for someone on this board who wants to travel cheap.

We're house sitting for 12 days in Athens next month, and for two months in Australia this summer.

We use trustedhousesitters.com

We slightly prefer renting, as then there's nothing to "take care of" and way more flexibility, so I definitely wouldn't do it full time, but the occasionally house sit is fun.

I will definitely look into this in the future.  I have a diabetic cat that I have to board sometimes so he gets his shots.  I would much rather have someone stay with him!

Interesting.  I'm going to check this out.  Does anyone know the best place to find house sitting opportunities where there are no indoor pets?  I have allergies to most pets so that wouldn't work for me but I would love to travel with the wife.

Ah, most are pet based (because people need people to watch their pets much more than they need someone to watch their empty house).

Obviously no pets is preferable, because it's way less work, but it's also much less frequent. It does exist, but word of mouth referrals is probably a lot more useful here too.

We once ended up with the situation where someone paid us to watch our house and take care of the dogs while we were on vacation.

I came across her reques through my network: she needed short term housing between moves, we were doing AirBnB at the time but going on vacation, I suggested reduced rate AirBnB (wanted to the convenience of credit card payment and "insurance") in exchange for also watching the house and dogs. Was win-win I think.

Housing is a little tight where we are, not sure if you can normally get people to pay you for watching your dogs :)
