Moving app/site: Unpakt

Unpakt is an app and web site that helps you inventory your items for a move, and then gets you competitive bids from multiple movers.

https://www.unpakt.com/

You enter all of the items you want to move, and the starting and ending destinations, and you get a guaranteed price from the movers.

The surprise Mustachian benefit was that you can see the incremental price of adding one more item. For example, after learning that our $20 ikea shelving unit would cost $27 to move, we decided to sell it at the garage sale before we left. In all, we ended up saving about $1200 on items that we chose not to move. Our biggest learning was that volume matters more than weight. So we ended up putting some oddly-shaped items in our car for the move to save money.

We ended up picking the lowest price movers from among the multiple bids, and we were pleased with their service. Normally I'd worry about taking the cheap bid, but with Unpakt, they have Yelp-style reviews so you can see what previous customers have to say about each mover. To our surprise, the movers turned up towing a 20' trailer behind a pickup, rather than a moving van, but it worked great and was easier for them to load and unload as it sat quite low to the ground.

Because we did a careful inventory, we did not have any extra chargers, and only paid the low guaranteed price. And if we had forgotten something, I like that the extra fees are clearly displayed. I also like that you pay Unpakt, not the movers (though we did tip them). You can put it all on a credit card and earn reward miles.

If you are moving, I would recommend using the site at least to review your moving inventory, as you might change your mind about what to take with you.
