Mens Clothing - Websites for trading or purchasing??
« on: May 10, 2016, 05:19:15 AM »
Work requires me to wear suits either with or without ties.  I try to purchase the bare minimum but also can't be wearing the same shirts too often.  Is there a good site to buy good quality men's dress shirts or even trade with other men.  I've tried to sell some on eBay and there doesn't seem to be much demand (even though they are often almost brand new in quality when I sell).  I also can't seem to find a big selection on eBay of my size, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried thrift stores/goodwill type places? Try to find one in a more upscale neighborhood, and you may be able to get brand-new shirts for cheap.

FWIW, I started buying Modena shirts for standard-issue solid color dress shirts. They're not "cheap," but I feel like they're reasonably priced, and have held up well so far. You can get them online (I've seen them on Amazon for sure).

Poshmark is a good app for buying/selling used clothing. Although its mostly women, there is still a decent selection of Men's clothing.

Thanks!  I have not tried that although I will.  I have a friend who gets a lot of items from one.  I would think finding the exact size and fit may be tough (15.5 x 32 slim fit dress shirt)  That seems to be an issue on eBay for me.

Thanks.  I had not heard of that site.  I did check it out.  Definitely a possibility.  Is it better to sell there rather than eBay?

If you find a well-made shirt that's not perfect fit, it's probably worth tailoring (find a good, independent tailor). I generally buy regular fit shirts and just have them bring in the midsection for a slimmer fit.

Too bad you're in the US. I have a bunch of Etro and Boss shirts in your size, Medium, slim fit, practically brand new, all retailing in the $150s, and a couple of beautiful size 38/32 Paul Smith and Zegna suits...Men in Yellowknife don't exactly dress up to work at the diamond mines or to ride their snowmobile/ATV (I don't either since I moved back here 2-3 years ago) but I can't resign myself to donate them to our local Salvation Army thrift store...

Query:  how do the workplace business attire monitors know which white shirt I am wearing that day?

What happens if they find out I have worn one (1) of my eight (8) too often?

Most are button-down collars but some aren't.  Is that it?

My wife buys and sells on there quite a bit. I don't know how quickly Men's merchandise sells, but I would guess it is faster than eBay. I would also advise comparing the fees between sites to make sure they are comparable.

If you are buying new it's hard to beat Costco's dress shirts for under $15 or you could see what my local Goodwill is selling them for because I donated a ton of them earlier in the year when I went FIRE.

Interesting.  What is the cost of doing that???

I forget how much per shirt, but I bought a new suit last summer, and had that altered (pants hem, jacket tucked) and a few shirts at the same time for under $50 or less total. If you do buy at a store, many will include alterations with the purchase (Nordstrom/Nordstrom Rack does this). There's a more expensive men's shop that I occasionally go to as well that has free alterations with purchase, and will repair items bought there free. It makes a little bit more sense to spend some money buying suits or slacks than shirts, as those have longer life spans.

Thrifting is great though, because you can sometimes find unworn, well-made pieces for very little money. It's also time-intensive.
