Mattress cooling?
« on: April 02, 2016, 07:06:39 AM »
When my husband and I got married a little over a year ago, we bought a Tuft and Needle mattress. It's been a pretty good mattress, but one thing I've noticed that I don't remember having a problem with before is I tend to sweat against the mattress. I'm cool enough otherwise to need a cover, but feel hot against the mattress. I'm guessing the foam is trapping too much of my body heat. My husband does not have this problem and is typically cooler than me while sleeping (well, I start colder but end up hotter).

What can I do to not sleep as hot against the mattress? Preferably that won't bother my husband since he is comfortable as is. Has anyone tried any mattress topper things? Are they useful? Should I just put up with it? It's not terrible, so I could. But I definitely start cold and then slowly remove blanket layers while sleeping until I'm generally fighting too hot with one blanket but too cold without it, while my husband just stays under lots of blankets all night.

Not the same situation here, but my DH sleeps much cooler than I do.  A ceiling fan helps (me under a sheet, and him under a sheet and a blanket).

I use a mattress pad/topper that is fairly thin (and I have a Tuft and Needle mattress), and we do not have that problem. Also, make sure to use mostly cotton sheets. If they are polyester or silk or something... not so breathable.

Getting hotter as you sleep longer seems backwards... maybe see a doctor, review any meds? No offense, just a thought.

Our sheets are 60% cotton, 40% polyester. I've both used and not used a mattress pad, I'm not sure if it made a difference. Maybe I'll have to experiment.

I think getting hotter as I sleep is normal - blankets are supposed to trap heat, after all. I often start a little cold, it takes me a while to trap enough heat, but then once I do I quickly feel too hot. I have a pretty narrow "comfortable" range, unfortunately. My mom has the same problem.

Sleep with covers in layers you can peel off. We have (100%) cotton sheets, then a coverlet, then a blanket. I sleep with the sheets and coverlet and frequently peel the coverlet off. DH sleeps with all 3.

Anyone tried mattress toppers with "cooling gel" effects and stuff like that? I am looking to buy a mattress soon, and fear the warm nights of Texas in the summer..

Definitely switch to all cotton sheets. We also use a cotton mattress pad that's not quilted to help keep perspiration out of the mattress.

Your sleep pattern sounds just like mine, so I'm guessing you might be on the thin side. Menopause exacerbates this wildly, so hitting on a workable solution now will pay off later. One thing I do when I get too hot is just to stick one bare foot out from under the covers. It helps and it's less disruptive than tossing the covers off.

I run hot and have a memory foam mattress.  In the winter I just keep the house temp low at night.  In the summer I have the ceiling fan on.  My wife is the opposite so she always has blankets piled on.

If money weren't a factor I would consider this product.

Oslo gal I dread the hot Texas nights!  I have a love/hate relationship with a/c too.  I wake up when I get too hot, then the a/c kicks in and blows cold air on me and I get chilled so I cover up with a light cover, then the a/c goes off, I get too hot, the room goes up 1 - 2 degrees and and I wake up again.  All night.  I have a ceiling fan that I use and I 've tried putting the bed in different parts of the room so that I don't get so much cold air on me.

I have a mattress topper with gel fibres in it that I bought from Target and that seems to help with sweaty nights.  I wash it frequently.  I have bought a "chillow" too
http://www.amazon.com/CHILLOW-Pillow-Cooling-Pad-21/dp/B00GRT48HO/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1460469029&sr=1-1&keywords=chillow+pillow
but I didn't like the plasticy rubbery feel of this even inside a pillowcase. It did feel cooler though.

One more attempt this year is this http://www.walmart.com/ip/16-Dc-Stand-Fan-Black/42206206
which is meant to be super quiet.

Other than that,  I go camping in Colorado mid-way through the summer with the kiddoes. Those cool nights are just heaven.

Sticking my feet out is a trick I use often. I don't like to tuck in the covers due to this. My husband prefers them tucked in so one side of the bed is tucked and one is not!

Our mattress pad is waterproof, and I thought maybe that was the problem, but the nights got cooler again and I stopped noticing the sweating problem a few nights before removing the mattress pad anyway, so I don't know if or how much affect that had. It might be a long trial and error process.

Most of what you wrote could apply to me.  :(

I can't use a normal mattress protector either.

I use:

It was expensive but I don't sweat with it at all and it has held up really well.

I've noticed that many of the softer foam topped mattresses feel warmer when you sleep on them.  You sink in to them and they surround more of your body, trapping heat.  It's one of many reasons that I prefer to sleep on a firm mattress with little give.

Foam = hot
Latex = cool

We have foam as well, and piled on a couple thick 100% cotton toppers. Helps a lot.

Next mattress (when I can 'justify' the spend) will be latex

I have a rock hard foam mattress that isn't particularly warm feeling.  It just seems to be certain types of the softer foam (memory foams in particular) that have this problem.

It's definitely not an issue of sinking in. The mattress is quite firm — firmer than I think I would have picked alone because I like lounging on a soft comfy mattress. But I just like that for lounging and don't particularly notice a difference in sleep due to it being more firm and the firmness helps my husband sleep better with less back pain.

I bought this.  Yes it's pricey, although I got a pretty good deal for it on Wayfair.

The menopause hot flash/night sweat ordeal gives new meaning to the sleeping-hot problem.  And contrary to popular belief, it doesn't last just 1-2 years.  It's more like 5-7 years on average.

I can't imagine doing without the Chilipad, and it's easily paid for itself by now in lower A/C bills.  It will lower your bed temperature about 8 degrees compared to the temperature in the room, which is a LOT more economical than trying to keep the room temperature a few degrees below your ideal sleeping temperature, to achieve the same effect.

I agree it feels "plasticy" but I love my chillow during the hotter months.
