I’m very suspicious of Altucher. I used to follow him. Back in 2013/2014 he wrote numerous articles about how stocks and Wall Street are a scam and everybody should stay away. Then in 2015 he partners up with Porter Stansberry (who was busted by the SEC for defrauding customers through his newsletter business) to offer an “exclusive” stock picking newsletter called the “James Altucher 1% Advisory”! Of course, his newsletter costs thousands of dollars a year. It was at this point that I completely quit listening to the guy.

See the background on his business partner Porter Stansberry:

Fair enough.  I always read his articles with a sense of skepticism.  Some of his articles are clearly sales pitches, yet others are positive and motivational.  I wouldn't expect any mustachian could be suckered by a thousand dollar newsletter, and I feel bad for the people who are, but that doesn't mean his other articles couldn't be beneficial to us.

Either way, these are books that I'd like to read, but would never buy.  I figure it doesn't hurt to enter the giveaway for the chance to get them for free.

Excellent point. Unfortunately in the past I fell for some of these stock newsletter scams. It's actually a huge (sketchy) industry. Once they get your email address they'll keep hitting you with promotional / faux-educational material. This is especially true for the doomsday/buy gold crowd.

Just wanted to throw that warning out there - nothing wrong with trying to get some free books though!

Oh, I'm familiar.  I was once tempted by those types of e-mails, but now I know better.  It just doesn't make sense that someone that says they want to help you increase your net worth, wants to sell you something that will lower it by several hundred (or thousand).

I've thought about offering financial advice as a side-gig, but then decided that it didn't make sense.  If I really have my client's best interest in mind, I should offer the advice for free.

I like Altucher's articles on his website -- and his latest book, "Reinvent Yourself" was actually pretty enjoyable.

That being said, though, I wouldn't pay for any of his "premium" content.

I haven't bought any of his content or read anything of his, honestly, but he has some incredible guests on his podcast and they are generally very, very good
