Investigative / long-form journalism worth reading
« on: August 05, 2018, 11:55:31 PM »
Hi everyone, I thought it'd be great to make a list of articles worth reading because it changed your mind about something. For now let's leave politics out of it (unless you all really want).

Some recent ones:

Water Wars of Arizona - interesting account of the local effects of the regional water crisis facing the Western US. Changed my perspective on those farmers out there.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/19/magazine/the-water-wars-of-arizona.html

Kingdom of Dust - about farming in California and above-mentioned water crisis. Changed my perspective on local farmers.
https://story.californiasunday.com/resnick-a-kingdom-from-dust

Pain Refugees - about the opioid epidemic. Increased my sympathy for patients with chronic pain.
https://harpers.org/archive/2018/04/the-pain-refugees/?single=1

The White Flight of Derek Black - gave me a better appreciation that children of racists are also their victims (the most personal to me of the listed articles).

This is a great topic - thank you for starting it OP!

I read this article recently: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/08/01/magazine/climate-change-losing-earth.html

I can't say it changed my mind about anything as I am already a firm believer in Climate Change but this article was eye opening in so many other ways.

Thanks everyone for contributing. The article on the "guardians" for elderly was scary! It prompted me to make sure my parent's healthcare power of attorney and durable power of attorney paperwork was filled out!

I wouldn't say this changed my mind, exactly, but it made me realize that self-driving cars are further away than I had thought.

Kinda funny, a few years ago, I was sure they weren't really going to be a thing any time soon, then I read MMM's post about riding in one (and did some other reading), did a 180 and started to think we were on the verge.

My mouth has been wide open in shock for the last 5 minutes of reading this and I am nowhere near done yet.  This is absolutely disgusting.  That said, thank you for posting!

I just discovered an entire section on The Guardian's website called The Long Read. https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/the-long-read Awesome, compelling stories.

Not to derail the fantastic specific recommendations, but longform.org does a great job of compiling and aggregating worthwhile, long nonfiction articles.

The social ideology of the motorcar: http://unevenearth.org/2018/08/the-social-ideology-of-the-motorcar/

"This 1973 essay on how cars have taken over our cities remains as relevant as ever"

Good read about how cars have changed society.

Thanks for the recommendations. I like longform.org, but they seem too murder-obsessed for my taste. Wading through all of those articles does yield good ones, though.
