Ikea solar panel lamps
« on: August 28, 2014, 03:22:53 PM »
I love these lamps: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90154371/

Powered by solar panel and you can take the panel outside in the sun to charge, and then in the evening take it inside and you'll have free lightning for most of the evening.

Can anybody recommend other products like this, that you can just set up inside, instead of buying huge solar panels and put on the roof?

I'd be more interested in the brightness & duration of the light, and the longevity of the battery.  Great convenience (especially for transient renters) but I bet it's a much lower return on investment than coughing up thousands of dollars for a grid-tied photovoltaic array.

IKEA has done many wonderful things for home furnishings, but this reeks of greenwashing.

I use solar lights in all of the low traffic areas in the house where I don't need to turn on a light. In the morning, I stick them in south facing windows and recharge. I have a few different models.

I've used the Ikea solar products for outside use and don't seem to get more than a year out of the solar panel before it starts to weaken and won't create a full charge. I've had the ones above for more than 3 years and they still work great. i haven't needed to replace the rechargeable battery after daily use.

It says equivalent to 15 watt incandescent.  Not very bright.

I bought that lamp, or something very similar, about 7 years ago.  Decent light when recently charged but degrades a bit too quick for my taste.  The color on the plastic also faded like crazy on my yellow.

Good concept, but needs a bit more development I think.

Thanks for the links. Those does seem like more high quality products. I will look more into them.
