Consider joining AARP
« on: May 20, 2020, 06:11:57 PM »
Don't laugh - because I never thought I'd join AARP, but I just did, and in the first month I've received discounts on things I already pay for monthly anyway: my phone bill and audible subscription. They are also sending me a free utility bag which I probably don't need.

I joined for $12 a YEAR, (but I think that was a promo - it's usually $16)

I thought you had to be 50 but I just saw this on wikipedia: "There are no longer any age restrictions for membership.[17]"

I know they have other discounts on travel and other things - but I haven't explored any of it yet.

I joined AARP years ago when seeing that the hotel we were reserving for a week of vacation had an AARP discount that was better than their club rate and they offered no AAA discount.  That one vacation stay payed for a 5 year membership and then some.  Dunkin donuts used to give you a free donut with a large coffee.  I'm not a donut eater, but my kids are, so I'd get them one with each visit.  They don't do that anymore, so I dropped membership.

"Car JacK"  Thanks for listing your discount experience.  Their site is so overwhelming with info that it's hard to drill down to see what benefits you get.  I just learned yesterday that they have health quizzes and videos that earn you points to redeem such as a a $15 gift card....but then again you have to sort through the weeds of things I don't want. I probably shouldn't waste time taking quizzes but I did learn things.

Meteor, just in case you want to cut your audible payments out, most public libraries have digital audiobook borrowing similar to audible now. If you have a library card, you can get the Overdrive app on your phone and borrow audiobooks for free. Might be worth checking to see if your local library system has Overdrive.

I do use the library downloads first but then about 30% of the time they don't have what I want.  But I always look at the library first for sure.  It's a great perk.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
