http://www.gutenberg.org/

This is a plug for the website Gutenberg, which basically makes books that are out of Copyright available to the public in the USA.

Think Dickens, Dostoevesky, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Tolstoy, Dumas, Nietzsche, Kipling, etc... all free.

If you like reading, take a look.

I remember seeing this site years ago, but forgot about it until now. Thank you for bringing it up! I've added a few titles to my personal library and reading list already.

No problem, I read 3 Mark Twain books last month because of that site. I think it's rather disgusting that Barnes and Noble publishes these classics, and sells them to the buyer for low price of $14.99/book when they get the material for free!

Agreed. I wonder if schools know about this site. I remember in high school being forced to get a copy of one of these classics each year for advanced English.

I like to listen to audio books, so I go with Librivox.com. They have an app too, I don't know if it is offically theirs, but it works pretty well. I am currently listening to the autobiography of Theodore Roosevelt.

This site is full of interesting information...I'll have to check libriovox for some of the books my library doesn't have! (your original link didn't work for me)

I've used both Gutenberg and Librivox and both are great.  I have found that some Librivox recordings are better than others.  Lots of them have a different reader for each chapter of the book, since it is all volunteer based.  However, look around some, many books have multiple versions and often you can find a version that has the same reader for all chapters.  This is my preference because I listen to them at night to help me fall asleep.  It's really jarring when you go from a reader with a soothing voice to a louder, more abrasive voice on the next chapter!  Not all reading voices are equally appealing!  But it's free, so I can't complain.  Also, it's probably not an issue if you are awake when listening.  :)

I really like the reader Karen Savage - she has recordings for several Jane Austen books and reads in a British accent.  I like her versions of Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park, and she's also done a version of the Secret Garden and many others.

That's interesting.

Amazon usually (won't say always just in case) has out of copyright kindle books listed for free. You go through the purchase process, but they are listed at $0.00.

I think sometimes places will make some sort of special edition or illustrated edition and try to charge something for it though.

I read a lot of the classics on Amazon. I just recently read this article, and so I am trying to share the information with everyone I know because I've had Amazon Prime for 3 years and never knew that they have a program called "Kindle First." Google it and the correct page will pull up, basically you get a free book (choose from 6) that comes out on the 1st of the coming up month.
