How much do you spend on work/ dress shoes?
« on: July 11, 2023, 06:38:52 AM »
I am wondering if it's better to buy long lasting leather/ good year welt shoes or stay cheap. Any recommendations?

Probably depends a lot on where and how often you're wearing them? Once or twice a year for weddings is a very different use-case from wearing them every day for work.

I fall more on the former side of things, and I find that cheaper options like Florsheim look good and are comfortable (I have Wide feet, so finding dress shoes that fit well is a challenge). I also have a pair of Johnston & Murphy, and while I like them, I can't say that they're drastically different in looks or wear quality (in my very limited experience to date).

I bought my good ones (Alden, Allen Edmonds) for cheap on eBay.  For <$100, you should be able to find a pair of classic shoes in lightly used condition that can be rebuilt pretty much indefinitely.

I purchased my dress shoes when I needed something to go to a dance in first year university . . . along with the only suit I'll ever own.  I remember that it was ridiculous . . . about 250$ for the leather shoes, suit jacket, pants, dress shirt, belt, and two ties.

Still have them all now, 20 years later.  They still get worn to weddings/funerals as necessary.  I guess since dress clothes are a once in a lifetime purchase you just buy once and deal with the pain.

Exactly.  Working overseas in wet/muddy countries, I go through a lot of comfortable Eccos with rubber soles.  They're more expensive but super comfy.

I have some more expensive leather sole wing tips for the balls, weddings, and funerals.

In both cases, I value comfort and appearance over cost.

$0, I wear trail runners for every occasion, and either no one cares, or they just don't say anything. I'm sympathetic to the notion that putting on "nice" shoes is a sign of respect in some social situation, but I have an extremist view on shoes, many of which are uncomfortable and bad for long-term foot-health, e.g. see this argument. There was also a time and place foot-binding was considered a reasonable social signalling behavior... Disregard if you find dress shoes neither uncomfortable nor inconvenient though!

I bought my Allen edmonds on significant sale years ago... they have, for the most part held up great.  I have had some of them resoled over the years.  Most of my suits are mid-grade, made in the usa.  they are about 10 years old at this point, and still mostly look great.

my view is buy quality and take care of it.  might pay a little more, but it will last forever, and is a better use of our planet's resources.  I hate fast fashion, but that really isn't the point of this thread.

I still have a pair of Blundstones that I have been wearing pretty much every day for the past fifteen years although I haven't worn them since I retired to Mexico a few years ago. They honestly look good dressed up or dressed down, I use them for camping, light hiking, and general streetwear, even in -40C weather with a good sheep insole and wool socks to walk to and from work when I lived in Yellowknife. They were nice enough to fit with my uniform when I was working as an aircrew for an airline. They are everything-proof but not fire-proof, I melted the rubber sole slightly when I was trying to re-arrange logs in a campfire...My daughter got tired of seeing me wearing them and offered me a new pair for my birthday, two or three years ago, on the promise I'd get rid of the old pair. But I don't have the heart to get rid of them, plus I was told they have a lifetime warranty so...Before the Blundstones, I had a pair of Born Chelsea-style boots that lasted a good ten years and still looked decent after a decade of heavy use. Those two brands have served me over the years. Nowadays, I pretty much wear sandals year-round so I keep both pairs of Blundstones in my closet.

Full leather Italian is the best option. Lasts forever and well worth the cost.
