Cross-country move and storage?

We've got a cross-country (well, half-country) move coming up, with an indeterminate wait on the other side while we try to buy a house, so we're looking into containerized moving options (PODS, etc.). Anybody have particularly good experience with any of these services? And before anyone suggests it, I know that driving our own Uhaul and finding a storage facility would be cheaper, but I am not driving a truck 18 hours across the mountains in the winter. Sorry. Not happening.

I've moved by POD twice. Both times with a delay between packing up the old home and moving into the new home. I really think it's the best option in those situations. The storage fee for the unit is reasonable and definitely worth NOT having to unpack into storage and repack to move into a new home.

The self-packing thing is a bit of a challenge. You really need someone who is good at using space in 3 dimensions. Fortunately my DH is great at this. If you and your spouse are not, it may be worth hiring help for this part.

I have used both a Uhaul and Pods. Both are good and cheap. I prefer the Pods option though. I liked the convenience of packing all my stuff up and then just having to deal with my care separately.

Yeah, we ended up going with PODS - their per-month storage fee is higher but they had the best customer service up front, and lower mileage costs (and I negotiated a 15% discount on that when I pointed out the storage fee differential). Now just hassling with the costs with the city to reserve parking spaces and get a right-of-way permit. A future house will have a driveway and it will be glorious...
