Free online college classes/resources
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:24:21 AM »
I've been wanting to learn more philosophy lately (partially so I can argue more effectively with my philosophy-major boyfriend), and I stumbled across this awesome list of free online college courses/resources. I'm really stoked to try some of these courses while I'm on winter vacation!

Probably going to start with "A Romp Through Ethics for Complete Beginners" from Oxford. Sounds fun.

Enjoy!

This matter has been raised before, but it is worth reposting.

These two amazing links take you to websites where one can view university lectures for free, any day, any time, from your own home.

Visit Zooinverse, the link below, and you will see an example of crowdsourcing. Scientists have several projects where data needs to be transcribed from images or handwritten text. Computers cannot do this, so volunteers transcribe, several volunteers transcribe the same image, and a computer assesses the results, so any volunteer who makes a mistake is ‘outvoted’ by the other volunteers.

As an MIT student, I highly recommend OCW mentioned above. MIT Students use it all the time as well.

While I'm responding, check out https://www.edx.org/ as well

Also: my first post. Yay :)

Not sure if these are cross listed on any of the sites already mentioned, but thought I'd throw in Courseara as a resource for online learning.  I've done a couple of the classes and liked the format.

Also, this one is more specific to programming but I've been using treehouse which is a resource for mostly web or mobile app development.  Edit: this is a paid subscription, but you can put your account on "hold" if you aren't going to be a heavy user.  I consider this an investment because it teaches you skills to become employed as a programmer.

Another edit, I forgot Khan Academy which is a great resource for learning or refreshing your memory about math.  This one is also free (like Coursera).  I've only used it for math, but its got other subjects on there too.
