upgrade golf clubs ??
« on: January 12, 2021, 05:37:57 AM »
OK, I am a mediocre player but, am thinking of upgrading my golf clubs. I am typically 15-20 handicap player and am a recreational player, not a die hard. Still, I would like to improve my game since my sons are starting to pound me on the course!    LOL
Also, I have just retired 4 months ago so, I want to get back into golf again.

Anyway, I have been using a basic entry-level set of Tommy Armour clubs, I got from Dick's Sports years ago.  OK , not great.
I also have started taking a few lessons.

So, I am looking for good suggestions on a set of irons. I am looking used and budget is $400 or so max.

I am 5'-11", 175lb, and 65yo ... not a heavy hitter.

I know this is not very Moustacheing but, it's a great way for me to spend time with my sons.

Thx

Buy used name brand set and get the lies bent to your liking. I'm a PING guy but plenty of good options.

Just get something with the right flex (hint: you're not going to get stronger at age 65) and length. A forgiving face is also a good idea, don't go out and buy blades with a pea-sized sweet spot.

Used irons are dirt cheap. You can get a full brand name set for $200-300 that is just a good cleaning away from looking brand new. Try them out, if they feel right, buy them.

There are lots of options.  Here is one place that sells pre-owned.  https://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/iron-sets/   I'd also look at craigslist, facebook marketplace, etc.

The best irons ever made are the Ping Eye 2 irons, they always get tested against the latest and greatest irons and still hold up. You can probably find them for $200 - best money you will ever spend. Look out for the beryllium irons (rare), get them if you can.

I have Ping S58's myself, similar to what Bubba Watson plays. Grab a used set, clean em up, and install new grips and they'll be good forever.
For drivers, fairway metals, hybrids I've been playing Titleist. Everything 910 model and up (after about 2010) uses the Surefit hosel, so all heads and shafts are interchangeable. It's been a good way to buy old gear and upgrade heads and shafts over time. Can also adjust to bias for fade/draw, low/high, etc.

Some inspiration from the PGA Tour:

I am hardcore golfer (low handicapper)...not a mustachian hobbie for sure! No matter what getting fit for clubs that work for you is best money you can spend.  Proper fitting essential and you can even buy used clubs altered to your specs (lie angle, lenth, shaft stiffness etc.)  All bodies are different even for folks with same height.

I just bought the Bazooka 370 full set. I love the irons, the woods and one hybrid are pretty good, and driver is eh but for a full set you can't beat it. Known as your best value in golf. I would look at that set for $439 full price or the 470 is $100 more but is graphite if you are looking for that.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
