Convection Oven Range? (How loud are they?)
« on: January 27, 2022, 01:52:05 PM »
Looking at replacing the Oven range, some deals on convection ranges out there.

Anyone that has one, which one do you have?  How loud are they?  A co-worker mentioned that he hated his, because the fan is so loud.  Maybe its just him?

Looking at getting this one...

It's about as loud as one of those bathroom sized space heaters, if you put it inside a metal box, which you should never do.

I cannot notice mine running. It is a tiny fan.

I don't really notice ours.  It's slightly louder than the fridge kicking on, but not by much.

You can turn the convection option on or off, but on mine (an LG), a reasonably quiet fan runs in the oven regardless.

More important than the convection, to me, was an induction cooktop.  It has made cooking more pleasant, and cleaning so much easier.  The cooktop, however, has louder fans.

I don't have that model but the Samsung convection oven I had didn't make noticeable noise.

It's been quite a while since we moved from our house with a convection oven but I'm pretty sure the gas oven we have now is louder.

We bought an electric convection oven in our old house and hated it. Cooking was very uneven. Constantly had to rotate the pan and even then, didn’t cook properly. This was a Samsung with one heating element at the top, so turning the fan off meant it was essentially on broil. I learned my lesson. Consumer Reports generally doesn’t recommend electric convection because a standard electric heats so evenly that the fan just creates problems.

edited to add--- The convection fan wasn't noticeable.  Since it was a slide-in type (controls at front of stove), the fan for cooling electronics was louder from what I remember, and that fan was relatively quiet.

I have had a Kenmore, a Whirlpool, and now a GE convection oven.  All three, I could tell there was a fan running, but none were offensive.

However, your pictures shows Air Fry.  Are air fryers louder than a standard convection oven?  I have only used counter top versions of air fryers and they are definitely louder than a convection oven.

I think our new oven is that model, but the gas version. You can choose to use convection or not. I have never had a convection oven before and I haven't had the time to learn how to use this one (do you have to adjust cooking times, etc?) so I just use the normal bake function. It also has the air fryer and we love our countertop air fryer so we went ahead and bought the special air fryer tray that you need to use the oven's air fryer function. However, we haven't actually used that function in the oven yet.

Yes, we bought a more expensive range that had fancy features we aren't using. We have 2 toddlers and have been very busy and haven't had the time to figure out the fancy features yet. Hopefully we have time to figure it out soon!

We have the LG stove with the optional convection oven setting (it came with the house.) we’ve used it a couple of times for frozen French fries and it’s not obnoxiously loud but doesn’t seem like it makes much difference in the end product, either.

LG with an induction top. The Induction top does have a pretty noisy cooling fan.

I can report back! This thread inspired me to use the air fryer feature on the oven for lunch yesterday. I used it for frozen beer battered fish and I was pleasantly surprised that there was almost no noise at all! The countertop air fryer is extremely loud, but I could only hear the oven if I put my ear right up against the top of it, and then just barely. I actually thought it might not be on! It worked just as well as the countertop one and the fish came out nice and crispy. When using the regular oven setting it is usually a bit soggy.

The only thing that might be a downside is that it pumped a ton of hot air into the kitchen while it was running. I was ok with that because it is winter and cold out and a little extra heat is appreciated, but I could see it being a real downside in summer.

I like my cute little Hamilton Beach countertop oven. It has a convection (fan) setting but I prefer not to use it. When I have used it, the fan is very quiet, though. I don't see any difference in cooking, with or without the fan.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
