Cheap/Free File/Photo Share Service/App
« on: July 26, 2020, 03:22:04 PM »
Hey all,

My wife and I just returned from a family reunion. (We quarantined in place and only risked our own health, after a pre-quarantine of two weeks.) The family is looking for a safe and secure, cheap or free service, app, etc. that will allow everyone to upload and download all of their raw pictures.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I'm surprised by the lack of responses. Maybe I asked the wrong question? Said another way, what do others do to share photos or other large files in excess of 20 gigs with distant family without breaking the bank?

Thanks!

Internet options:

Facebook: free
Google One: first 15GB is free. Up to 100GB for 1.99 month

Google One is going to be the cheapest. Storage is cheap these days but not free!

How many groups are the pictures being sent to?

You could buy n number of usb drives and put the photos on there, then send them to the n number of groups.

I've never thanked a bloodaxe before, but thank you bloodaxe! Great question.

-The pictures are possessed by eight different subgroups in the family in four different states.
-The pictures are on fifteen or so phones from different manufacturers and one SLR digital camera.
-The last time we did this, one of us was at a job with access to a corporate file sharing service. But, that's no longer available.
-We were hoping to have everyone upload their photos, one of us would combine them all, and then (a) allow those savvy enough to do so to download them or (b) transfer them to memory sticks and mail them out to those not savvy enough to download them.

Google looked like the cheapest option, but often this community is aware of niche services or hacks to save $.

Thanks for the help!

Does anyone in the family have amazon prime.  You may be able to upload photos to their service for free.  Not sure how easy it is to share between different users, but I know I can share an album with my wife on it.

I use Google Photos for so much (part time photographer/videographer). Given it's free, it's incredible.

But it isn't going to receive RAW files at full resolution, it will likely knock them down in resolution.

This is a good point, sharing RAW files at full resolution is very different from sharing JPEG files at reduced resolutions. 15 GB is enough to hold 8,000 to 10,000 5 MP JPEG photos (5 MP is still plenty of resolution for ordering reasonably large prints).
