Canadian internet (ON & QC) - Velcom
« on: April 27, 2013, 12:22:57 PM »
Just thought I'd pass this along...

If you don't have or want to cancel your home phone but still want DSL internet (through the phone cables), I just came across a company called Velcom that have... a 7mb/100Gb option for $28 all in. That's including the dryloop fee, which is usually $8+ all on its own ($10.xx where I am).

I went from NCF, which is an Ottawa non-profit, to Velcom and my bill went from $47 to $28. PLUS I got a speed bump - I was on 6mb DSL, now 7mb FTTN (fibre to the node). It's actually about 20% faster.

Downside: Their tech support is supposed to be slightly iffy (don't care; the cables are all Bell anyway), and there is a 100Gb cap instead of 300Gb I think it was before (again, don't care. I've only used a maximum of 80Gb a month in the past, and that was downloading a couple of MMORPGs to try. Plus the overage isn't even that bad..).

You can go up to 25Mb if you need faster, but.. I don't. Youtube streams perfectly quickly, and with Adblock Plus I don't load a whole load of... well, crap, honestly. And flashblock. Just means a 5kb textual webpage doesn't take 20 seconds to load and render because of all the other shite that comes with it.

Now - I have only had service with them for a few days but so far, so good.

There is a $95 install fee; that will be recouped in 5-6 months.

This is BY FAR the cheapest internet I have found (no that's not quite true; I used a Wind stick when I lived in Ottawa which was $20+tax for 'unlimited' which actually meant '5Gb then throttled').

Thanks for the info. I'm currently with Eastlink. Very expensive. I wasn't sure how to cut this bill. I will look into this.
