Can you recommend a rain jacket for daily bike commuter?
« on: December 07, 2016, 09:47:22 AM »
My husband says he would like a new rain jacket/pants for commuting (the old set is in tatters).  He bikes in all weathers, including snow, in the city for about a 20 minute commute. Needs to be bright and reflective, and have good coverage.   He said, not too expensive.

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

I like this jacket and shoes:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RL9RJ98/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01881CH9E/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mine are comfortable and sturdy, not too hot, and don't let in any of the rain or snow.  They miss the mark for bright and reflective though... I wear a bright vest over them.

Thank you, ditheca!  Unfortunately they are out of stock right now.

For now, I had a thought to do some research and it seems that Columbia has a lifetime warranty on outdoor clothing! I am going to send back the old jacket and see if they will repair or replace.  The seams actually began to fall apart in the first few months of wear, but we were too busy to return them, so my husband continued to wear them until they were completely useless.

Any rainjacket can be made super reflective for a few dollars, with something like this:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0062ESUOQ

I have one but I don't generally wear it when I ride, because my bike is already covered with reflectors and blinky lights that point in every direction.

Patagonia Torrentshell is an awesome jacket that comes in a variety of bright colors.  It's around $100 or a little more, but Patagonia stuff is built to last.  I try to be a minimalist when it comes to clothing but everyone needs one quality rain jacket.

I'd second anything Patagonia rain related (or outdoor research but you are talking more $$ there) Plus Patagonia has excellent warranties and the Worn Wear Wagon where they travel around repairing their old worn gear. We just really like Patagonia....

What is your husband looking for in a rain jacket?

- Does he want something that's cycling specific (tight fit, long tail, long arms, works but looks a little odd off bike)?
- A general purpose wet weather jacket?
- A light weight shell that can easily be folded up and put away if it warms up?

I think if he had a priority list it would be:
- keeps the rain off
- light weight so he can roll it up and put it in his backpack
- very visible (he has a reflective vest, but the brighter the better on a rainy night in gridlock traffic)
- cheap
- breathes
and way down on the list would be looks.  He would wear it only while biking.

Showers Pass makes great rain gear. If you're lucky, you'll find one at the thrift store for $2.00 like my wife did. :)
