Keep an eye open for garage sales in ritzy neighborhoods. I paid $4.25 used for my LeCrousset 15 years ago because it had a big scratch on the bottom. Fifteen years later it's still fine, but it looks as if it might rust out in another 50 years....

That's a shame. I wonder if you should have talked them down to $4.00 because of the risk of rust in 50 years.  ;)

The Martha Stewart enameled cast iron line at Macy's is excellent.  I got a navy blue (white inside) enameled dutch oven a few years ago and have really enjoyed it.  Don't own LC so can't personally compare, but the reviews on Macy's website seem to indicate that people think they are very high quality and comparable to LC.  They go on sale all the time so wait until they are a daily deal (happens all the time), and getting one for under $50 should not be a problem.

Costco sells Dutch ovens manufactured in France, very reasonably priced  ($60 or so). I love my Le Creuset and I know it will last a life-time but that will be my choice if I ever need another one!

I had Lodge dutch ovens for several years and just recently upgraded my set to Le Creuset and Staub.

To me, the biggest benefit of Le Creuset is their lifetime warranty. They'll basically replace any defective item for the lifetime of the product.

I enjoy cooking with them more than my Lodge set but I can't tell whether that's just because they're aesthetically more pleasing.

We have the Lodge enameled one.  Works great.  The only complaint was the original handle was plastic, so we bought the metal upgrade to make it oven safe for cooking our round loaf bread in.
