Bay Area- Used Bike/Bike Repair shop
« on: July 31, 2013, 11:50:42 AM »
Just wanted to share, I found a cool bike shop I think the MMM community would approve of, if you're anywhere near Mountain View and looking to buy a used bike or need repairs and don't want to DIY:

Sounds like it was a father/son weekend project to restore neighborhood bikes that took off and became an actual business. (Actually kind of wonder if the dad may be a MMM reader... if so then "hi!") As such, the kids are very involved, and if you'll be put off by the idea of being helped by young 'uns this is probably not the place for you. But I had read reviews beforehand and knew about this, so when I got there and the first person to approach me and check out my old, super neglected grubby/rusty bike was a young boy (I think he's maybe 10-12 but I'm a bad judge of ages) I decided to roll with it. He was very professional, asked how I'd be using the bike, looked everything over carefully, listed what he'd recommend doing and quotes for each part/service. After he was done and we brought the bike into the shop, his dad came out of the back and looked it over as well, coming up with the same verdict, so it seems like the kid knows his stuff!

Long story a little shorter, bike was fixed up on schedule and price was as quoted and (I think) very reasonable. I haven't had time to adjust the fit and actually ride it yet so I can't promise quality of service yet, but it looked good to me from my quick look at things. (I'll post again in this thread if I find out there were any problems with it.) No more rust and grime! I'm sure with some research I could've done it all myself, but I knew I'd never get around to it and start actually riding if I waited to do that. So if I'm going to give my money to someone to do it for me, I feel better about supporting a local family business, especially since these people were all really nice and I love that they're setting their kids up with so much great experience early on.

They also had a lot of used bikes for both kids and adults for sale, if you're looking to get started and don't have one yet. And I believe I read in other reviews if they aren't super busy they will let you watch when they repair things so you can learn to be self-sufficient, which is cool if it's true!
