Are Miele vacuums worth the money?
« on: January 23, 2021, 06:53:43 AM »
Anyone have a Miele canister vac? They are extremely well reviewed and I usually have no problem spending extra money to get the quality product but they are miles more expensive than other well reviewed vacuums. Seems like at least $500 for a pretty basic model when others are under $200.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I had the Compact Electro Plus C2 (or something like that) for the past few years. Just sold it on Facebook marketplace for a fraction of the purchase price, so for me the answer would be no. It has great suction, sure, and seems to hold up really well. But the bulk of a two-part machine drove me kind of nuts, and it's very awkward to store if you have limited closet space like me. It was also annoying to maneuver around furniture (I live in a smallish apartment with a lot of small bits of furniture like side tables, plant stands, etc. rather than a few big pieces). As a result, I avoided vacuuming because it was a hassle, would often leave it out instead of wrangling it back into the closet, etc. So my apartment was overall more full of cat hair and dust even though I had a top of the line vacuum.

I also disliked buying new bags and filters all the time. But, if you're looking at Mieles you probably already want a bag kind so that's implied.

I replaced it with a dyson portable stick vac. I know that a bagless isn't going to last as long, and I can tell the suction is a little less, but it's so agile and maneuverable I use it multiple times a day. It doubles as a handheld without nearly the space for add ons that the Miele required. The suction is totally up to the tasks I need (keeping the cat hair and bits of litter from building up anywhere). And, since I enjoy using it and it doesn't feel like a pain, my house is cleaner as a result. And at less than half the price of the Miele, I can buy a new one every 4-5 years if I need to and feel fine about it.

I was planning on buying one, and then discovered a Riccar and bought that instead. Not as pretty or cool looking, but very satisfied with the power/attachments and can order the HEPA bags cheaply on Amazon.

This is at least 12 year ago and it's still going strong, but not sure how they compare any more? Ours has a fiddly bit on the extendy arm that broke, but it's not necessary for it to still work (plastic ring that sort of covered the transition between attachments to make the shaft look neater I think).

That being said, we still use our upright old school on the carpets and the Riccar canister is a pain to drag around the house so it does get used less. I grew up with a canister vac and I greatly dislike the drag/bump/untangle from furniture part of it. We got it because we installed all wood floors and were warned about using uprights that have the moving beater bars and how it can scratch up flooring (if you can't turn them off, and our existing upright, you can't) and also their wheels are plastic so could leave scratches if you like flinging your vac around... so we were looking at powerful suction of the canister vacs and that led us to the Miele line because of the HEPA and power, but if you dislike vacuuming with it, it sort of defeats the purpose.

I tend to use the old Hoover on the rugs, and a swiffer broom to get the hairy/dusty stuff and don't pull out the canister vac as often since it seems more plan for a few hours' worth of time instead of a quick half hour vac of a room or three.

I hate vacuuming flat floors tho. I realized I miss/liked wall to wall carpet because you could get into a groove and make those nice vac patterns, but it's just boring AF now so I kind of don't do it myself any more (the husband has taken over the vac chore).

Sort of? Quicky information here:

Additionally, budget for the best vacuum you can buy. Think of it like any other appliance in your home. You wouldn't expect a $300 refrigerator to do a great job, nor would you pop down to Wallyworld for a cheap water heater and expect it to perform; You shouldn't expect less from a vacuum, and with your flooring types you need a good one. And, I think a canister vacuum is ideal for your needs.*

My favorite brands are (in order) Miele, Sebo, Riccar, and Panasonic. They're not flashy and super high-tech, but they will work very well for years.
*needs for that poster being mostly low pile/wood/tile flooring

We just bought a bagless Miele, and it seems to work pretty well.  I am confounded by their dealer pricing model, however: the one we bought (from best buy, but we could've gotten it other places) seemed expensive-is at $500-$600. The closest equivalent at the local dealer was more then twice as expensive: however, the dealers sell a different line so you can't really do an apples to apples comparison (plus, theirs have longer warranties, yada yada).

I'd like to support a local business, but ... c'mon, really?

We have an Electro C2 and are impressed by it. We were able to get a great deal using a 20% off coupon at Bed Bath Beyond on top of it being reduced 15% as the showroom model.

In contrast, we were gifted a Roomba and have not used it once. I plan to sell it soon.

I have a Miele canister that was received as a wedding present from my parents.  I've had it for almost 16 years and it still works without any major repairs (I had to get a hose unclogged once).  I have had the motorized head go out on me, and I purchased another rather than getting it replaced.  So, I'd say may $200 or so dollars in repairs during this time.

The floors in my house are a combo of hardwood, saltillo tile, and area rugs.  We have always had at least one shedding dog during this time.  It picks up dog fur very very easily- one maaaybe two passes only on the rugs.

My parents also have two Mieles.  One I remember from when I was a teenager, so it must be like 30 years old at this point.

Are they expensive?  Hell yes.  Are they well made and durable?  Hell yes.  Are they worth the price?  I would say probably yes, as I seriously hate replacing things and replacable things.  I put a high value on buying for life or a at least a long time.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
