App to countdown days to early retirement or FI
« on: July 30, 2015, 07:48:35 AM »
I reached FI 3 years ago (at age 50). I now workout a lot, cycle, work on my photography, travel and enjoy life.

In my spare time, I develop mobile apps. I am working on an app now that allows you to countdown the days to retirement or FI.  I am looking for some beta testers of the app (beta is scheduled for Sep 1, 2015).

Interested? Learn more at http://www.CountUsDown.com/Retirement

Thanks!

Is it just a countdown app?  Or does the app figure out your date for you based on assets, savings rate, etc.

Because just a countdown app doesn't really do much for me, but if I can tell it my numbers and then it helps track my progress and updates the countdown based on raises, changes in saving, asset growth, etc. I could use that app.

Hi Eric -- Thanks for that feedback (that's exactly what I was looking for). Version 1 will just be a countdown and the ability to share that countdown with your friends and family if you like. However, in version 2, I plan to add more specific features related to FI and retirement.

There's lots of countdown apps already (I've tried 6 or 8 of them). What makes this one unique?
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

The sharing capability makes it unique. I've also downloaded and used many in the past and about the only thing for sharing is the ability to post a share to twitter or FB.

With this app, you can invite friends and family to share a specific countdown and when they log into it, they will see their own countdowns and the ones they've been invited to.

Here are some use cases:

1. Let's say you and a group of friends are planning a vacation, you create a countdown for it and share it with them and everyone gets to countdown the days to the big vacation together.

2. Let's say you and your spouse are trying to reach retirement or financial independence. Setup a countdown, share it with your spouse and you can share in the fun of counting down the days.

3. Let's say you have a class reunion. Create a countdown and share with all your school mates.

The uses go on and on. With the existing countdown apps, you could only share the event once it happens via twitter or FB, you cannot countdown together.

Make sense?
