Thanks for sharing this. I actually unsubscribed from askreddit because it tends to be more entertaining than informative.

Some of the suggestions I could have guessed, just based on what people tend to get snooty about: coffee, headphones, beer. They are all ripe for hedonic adaptation. I'm happy to keep drinking my watery Folgers coffee, because if I experimented and tried to cultivate "better" taste in coffee, I wouldn't end up happier long term.

The best comment in my opinion was:
"I have heard this metaphor about how if you live in the sewer and don't know there is a way better world above you, you don't really feel like your life sucks either. So as a student I don't know if I really wanna read this thread."

There were definitely a few suggestions I would agree with, like shoes. But that doesn't mean I won't try to find reasonably good deals on them.

If by entertaining you mean annoying-as-fuck, I couldn't agree with you more.

I think it's more about just finding what you value. I started buying small amounts of good whole bean coffee at the grocery store and brewing single-cup pourover. It costs <$5/week, and tastes really good.

Agreed on the shoe thing though, to me there's nothing worse than buying something cheap over and over again when there's a more expensive option that I won't have to replace (within reason).

Nearly all of the default subs like askreddit are filled with junk unless you're 14 years old. You have to ditch those and add your own non default subs to make the site useful.

R/frugal has been interesting lately. I feel it is a combination of MMM, Dave Ramsey, ERE, FrugalWoods, etc all in one sub :D

The comment about pillows stuck out to me, as mundane background items in life often do. From what people say on the reddit thread, it seems like price often is a negligible factor in pillow preference. How much do you all spend on your pillows? Just curious.

My spouse likes these cooling memory foam ones that are 50+ apiece, but I prefer down ones that I can mold to different shapes based on my sleeping position. Mine are 20-40 apiece, but also 6+ years old and showing no wear. We have two each of our preferred pillows and the rest are cheaper, "normal" pillows that are for propping or for guest use.

Ok, I think you convinced me that I need to be spending at least $20 on pillows :)

I think the down is the key factor here, it doesn't seem to wear out the way the synthetic stuffing does. The pillows themselves (beauty rest brand if my memory from that far back can be trusted) are from walmart with allergy covers each from target. I change the pillow case at least weekly wash the outer cover once a month.
