android productivity apps
« on: June 14, 2025, 07:25:03 AM »
Hey all, what are your favorite free site blockers and time management, productivity apps? I have a terrible habit of being distracted by my phone and checking it multiple times esp after lunch and at bedtime.
I need something that is free and works on android phone.
Also, what do people use for scheduling across groups? For family members we are using a combination of google calendar, email reminders, but it doesn't seem to be 100% working. I end up being the default reminder for that day or day before, and I want to take that responsibility off me.

For the distraction issue you can change the screen to black and white. That way it's still there if you need it but doom scrolling is a whole lot less fun.

I feel you on the calendar thing.  We use a combination of paper calendar and Google,  but it's hard to get out of default parent mode.

Minimalist Phone is an awesome app that replaces your launcher with a Minimalist, black and white, no icons one. It allows you to hide apps, block apps (from 4 hours to 30 days), rename apps...
Turning the whole phone black and white also helps. I personally also uninstalled Chrome, YouTube and all social media apps. I regularly block my mail app.

The free version is good enough but I'm glad I paid 29€ for the full version.

Another trick is to lock your device or at least let it in another room.

People seem to be old enough to have digital devices so:
1. Announce that you will stop reminding people.
2  Stop reminding people.

Bonus point three:
3. Persist if fails happen until people have put their own systems in place. Offer kind consolidation if appropriate ;)

create a google calendar event 3 weeks from now: you will give $100 to people who email you with the subject line: $100. For those who miss emailing you: they snooze, they lose

Just don't have the phone at hand.  Keep it in another room, out in your car if you're at work, something like that . . . where if there's an emergency you can get to it, but it's a pain in the ass to use.  A person prone to distraction having a phone at hand is like a fat dude sitting down arms length from a chocolate cake.  Your willpower will lose.

On a different note, the HelloHabbit app is good for making recurring habbits and tracking how you are keeping up with them.

Thanks! Returned from a 5 day vacation with spotty wifi and felt like I got my life back! I think combo paper calendar,  Google calendars should be good enough. I will send text to the group day it's scheduled, but let pple know they will need to remember and not rely on me as secretary. Still need something to prevent phone checks. Lo fi way for now is a  dnd schedule, and keep phone away from me.

I use this:

https://getbrick.app/?srsltid=AfmBOopW9nCEqosMYDtwJReIH96ynHf5-UmWMueyI5cYIXsayKYvncWx

It’s a great little tool that has allowed me to take control of my social media quasi addiction. I don’t think I was there yet but I was definitely starting to get there. For me it was helpful in blocking apps and websites and when I placed the brick in the car or I left it at home when I was out doing stuff I had no option to turn those apps back on. Highly recommend!
