Alternatives for Office 365 - Password protecting files

I am considering staying with the Google Drive products over the Windows Office.  There is one thing that seems like a problem.  I keep a Word file that has all my passwords in my documents and I password protect that file.  I can open and edit Word files within the Google Docs environment, but I can't edit a password protected file.  Further, I can't password protect a Google Doc file.  I don't need "ultra" security, but I do feel better about a file that's at least password protected.  Can anyone give me a solid alternative?

Have you considered a password manager? There are many options out there, free (open source) and paid. I use KeePass and also Google's password manager (though I wouldn't trust everything to Google, I keep some less vital passwords stored there for convenience).

I use LastPass with multifactor authentication. I have the paid version, so it syncs across devices and platforms (I have access to my current passwords at home, at work, and on my phone).
