If you plan, or want to, make use of train travel, there is a nice offer going where you can now receive a sign up bonus of 40,000 points & $100 after $2,500 in spend within 90 days of account opening on the Bank of America Amtrak Credit card:

That would be at least enough to get you across country by train in a sleeper cabin, with meals included I believe. Would be nice to travel by something other than air, plan to take advantage of this. I don't know enough about Amtrak points but would like to hear what one might do with 40,000 points.
Is there an ongoing discussion about current ways to manufacture spend, if you have trouble making the minimum spending requirements?

ETA: 40,000 points is good for a bit over $1,000 in train travel. Nothing to sneeze at

I think /r/churning is one of the better places.

BoA is getting a bit stingy with their cards. We're waiting for some applications to drop off the credit report before applying for the Amtrak card.

One way to reach minimum spend is by paying taxes. There's a ~2% fee, which isn't as good as a Visa gift card MS but it's certainly a lot less leg work.

I did this one last year in preperation for the train trip we're raking at xmas.  I didn't get that many points though.  I attempted to get both Amtrak cards and was turned down for the second app.  Sucks, but probably for the better since we decided to fly back anyway.  Depending on how this trip goes, we may look into trying again for a deal like this to do a trip on the California Zephyr.
