I'm keen on non-cash side gigs because my contract with my main work is very restrictive about second + jobs, but fine about hobbies and volunteering.

Also, at a higher tax band, getting an untaxed service could be better than a higher pre-tax wage.

Back in the day, I worked part-time at a movie theater - 10 hours a week doing administrative stuff. Our theater had a reciprocal relationship with other movie theaters in town, so their employees could see movies at our theater for free, and vice versa. The manager would just call the other theater and say, "Two tickets for the 7:00 screening of Blankeky Blank 3. The name is begood." And then my hubby and I would go to the theater, give my name, sign a tracking sheet, and see a free movie!

^ I was definitely considering something like this. U love seeing movies but typically don't go because of the high cost.

I'm assuming you got paid for the administrative work as well?

One of my first jobs was at a theater - on top of free movie tickets there was free popcorn, and substantial discounts on other snacks. It was glorious.

I work at a university where the pay sucks.  But employees and their dependents can get their tuition waived.

I know I'm late to this game, but do you have to work FT at the university to get this perk, or only PT? Along with the other ideas in this thread, it's definitely interesting.

It depends on the university. Usually the employment/careers section of their website will have info about this, but you may have to hunt for it. Some universities will give FT employees two free classes a semester (including summer, so that's 6 classes a year) and one a semester for PT folks.

As for dependents, that's also highly variable. If that benefit exists, it may or may not include your spouse (could be just kids). It may or may not include other universities (sometimes they group together so XYZ universities all participate in the same tuition waiver program). And so forth.

One summer when I was an art student I volunteered in the graphic design department of a city aquarium in exchange for free admission any time so I could draw the fish. That was fun!
